A spreader bar for lifting solves one problem: it moves the connection points out to the ends of the load instead of letting slings pull inward at a steep angle. That does three things — it drops the tension in each sling leg, it keeps crushing side-load off the package, and it gives you far better control of tipping on a long or unbalanced piece. Start the selection with four questions: what the load weighs, how far apart the pick points need to be, whether the device hangs from a crane hook or mounts on forklift forks, and how much headroom you have between the load and the hook or mast. Those four answers narrow this collection quickly. The Vestil Adjustable Spreader Beams (SBM) line lists 13 models with a capacity range of 8,000 – 10,000 lb, while the Vestil Forklift Lifting Beam (FLB) line covers 4,000 – 10,000 lb across three models (FLB-D-4, FLB-D-6 and FLB-D-10) at $486.90 to $522.87.
The two terms get used interchangeably in purchasing conversations, and they are not the same device. A spreader beam is loaded in compression: sling legs run from a single top hook down to a lug at each end of the beam. A lifting beam is loaded in bending: a single central bail sits above the beam and the load hangs from points along its length.

Because a lifting beam resists bending rather than pure compression, it is normally heavier and bulkier than a spreader beam of the same rating. Pay for that extra steel only when low headroom forces it.
Fork-mounted beams are the most commonly mis-specified items in this category, and almost always for the same two reasons. First, the pockets have to match your forks and your carriage. The Star Industries Heavy Duty Extendable Spreader Bar (model 1150C) has fork pockets on 39″ centers and requires a 48″ or wider carriage; if your truck cannot spread the forks to that dimension, the bar will not seat. Second, the beam eats capacity twice. The 1150C has an empty weight of 545 lbs, and that weight hangs forward of the front axle along with the load, so the truck's net lifting capacity falls by more than the beam's weight alone. Work from the load center stated on your truck's data plate, not from the beam's own rating.
OSHA 1910.178(a)(4) is directly relevant here: modifications and additions that affect capacity or safe operation require the truck manufacturer's prior written approval, and the capacity, operation and maintenance plates must be changed to match. ANSI/ITSDF B56.1 covers safety requirements for low- and high-lift powered industrial trucks, including operating with attachments. Adjustable bars also deserve a second look — the 1150C extends from 8 to 12 ft and lists three capacities (8,000 / 6,400 / 5,000 lbs), so confirm which figure applies at the working length you actually need before you order.
Beyond plain structural bars, three specialty types show up here. Magnetic spreader beams (12 Vestil models, $1,297.12 – $1,952.19, including SBM-10-3-ML at 1,000 lb capacity and 3 ft wide) pick flat steel plate and sheet without slings or hooks. Their holding force depends on plate thickness, surface condition and any air gap from paint, scale or curvature — treat the catalog rating as a clean-surface figure and derate for real material. Telescoping adjustable beams (SBM-T-42-66 and SBM-T-72-124, $1,883.67 – $2,113.52) let one device cover a spread of load widths instead of stocking several fixed bars. Adjustable upper-bail beams with a hand chain crank (SBM-25-UBA-C and SBM-40-UBA-C, $1,000.58 – $1,164.32) let the operator shift the top pick point to balance an off-center load without re-rigging the slings — useful for motors, skids and machinery where the center of gravity is not at the middle.
Spreader beams, lifting beams and lifting magnets are below-the-hook lifting devices. ASME B30.20 covers their marking, construction, installation, inspection, testing and operation, and ASME BTH-1 addresses their structural design, including design categories and service classes tied to expected load cycles. Practically, that means a compliant device carries a legible rated load and identifying information, gets inspected before first use, and goes on a frequent and periodic inspection schedule after that. ASME B30.9 covers the slings that connect to the beam, and its sling-angle tables show why the spread matters: as the legs move away from vertical, tension in each leg climbs — at a 45° sling angle each leg carries roughly 1.41 times its share of the vertical load. OSHA 1910.179 addresses overhead and gantry cranes, and OSHA 1926.251 covers rigging equipment for material handling on construction sites. The Star Industries 1150C is listed in its product data as OSHA and ANSI compliant.
