How to Choose an Electric Grout Pump: Power Supply First

Power supply narrows the field faster than any other spec. The IMER 1106344 Mighty Small runs on standard 110V/60Hz service, tolerates 85V to 135V, and is listed as compatible with 6000-watt generators — that is the machine for interior work where all you have is a jobsite receptacle or a portable generator. The IMER 1106180 Step-Up 120, the Koine 3.1 (1106351) and the Koine 35 (1106315) all require 220V/60Hz single phase. The IMER 1106181 Step-Up 120 is three phase with a 7.5 HP motor, which means shop power, a generator sized for it, or a phase converter. Confirm the available service at the site before you order, because a three-phase machine on a single-phase site is an expensive doorstop. On construction sites, OSHA 1926.404(b)(1) requires ground-fault circuit interrupter protection or an assured equipment grounding conductor program for 120-volt, single-phase 15- and 20-ampere receptacle outlets, so plan cord and GFCI protection along with the pump itself.

Pumping Distance, Flow Rate and Maximum Aggregate Size

Three specs decide whether a pump can actually do your job: how far it will push material, how fast, and how coarse the mix can be. Maximum aggregate size is the one buyers most often skip. The IMER 1106180 Step-Up 120 is rated for 1/4 in aggregate; the three-phase 1106181 handles up to 3/8 in. If your mix is coarser than the rating, you will plug the hose no matter how much motor you have. Distance matters just as much: the 1106180 is rated up to 200 ft horizontal and 100 ft vertical, while the 1106181 and the Koine 35 are both rated to 300 ft horizontal. The Koine 3.1 is a smaller machine at 83 ft pumping distance and 49 ft height capacity. Match the rating to the longest run on the job, not the average one, and remember that bends, vertical lift and a stiffer mix all eat into the published figure.

The 1106345 Mighty Small is the 3 HP version of the compact spraying machine, and the 1106133 Silent 300 Prestige is listed at 24 HP — by far the largest unit in the collection. Continuous-Cycle Mixing and Self-Leveling Materials

A continuous-cycle spray and mixing pump meters water and dry material together and pumps without stopping to batch, which is what you want on self-leveling underlayment, plaster and render, where a cold joint or a change in consistency shows in the finished surface. Both Koine machines are continuous cycle: the 1106351 Koine 3.1 lists a dry-mode material flow rate of 1/4 to 3/5 cu ft/min at 4.5 HP max installed power, and the 1106315 Koine 35 pairs a 5 HP single-phase motor with a 3 HP drive motor and inverter technology for flow rates up to 60 cu ft per hour. The Koine 3.1 ships with a 66 ft power cable, 66 ft water hose and 50 ft material hose, so check whether the included hose covers your run before adding sections. Self-leveling work in particular rewards a machine that holds consistent output, since the pour has to stay wet edge to wet edge.

Site Setup, Safety and Running Cost

Weight and access decide where the machine can go. The Koine 3.1 is the lightest of the mixing pumps at 350.5 lbs on 12 in wheels; the 1106181 is 616 lbs, and the 1106180 is 690 lbs and towable, which is a trailer-and-ramp conversation, not a stairwell one. For the pumped-material side, OSHA 1926.702(e) requires that concrete pumping system discharge pipes have supports designed for 100 percent overload and that compressed air hoses use positive fail-safe joint connectors. Mixing and spraying bagged cementitious products also falls under OSHA's respirable crystalline silica standard for construction, 29 CFR 1926.1153, where employee exposure is involved. When you clear a blockage or service the machine, OSHA 1910.147 covers the control of hazardous energy — de-energize and lock out before opening a hopper or pump housing. Day to day, the cost that bites is cleanup: material left to set in a hose or stator is the most common reason a pump comes back for parts, so budget flush time at the end of every pour. The 100% duty cycle on the 1106181 means it is built to run continuously, but only if it is cleaned that way too.
