Forklift Lift Hooks for Secure and Versatile Lifting

Forklift lift hooks turn a set of forks into a rigging point, so a lift truck can move loads that were never built to sit on a pallet. This collection holds six forklift hook attachments from Vestil, Star Industries and Abaco Machines, priced from $125 to $9,717: swivel hooks with shackles, rigid and swivel hook plates, latched hoisting hooks, fork-mounted overhead load lifters, and a compressed-air vacuum lifter for stone slabs. Vestil's hook plates and hoisting hooks are rated 4,000 to 10,000 lb; the Star Industries model 1366 lift hook is rated 6,000 lb.

What a Forklift Hook Attachment Actually Does

A forklift hook attachment converts fork tines into a single suspended lifting point, so a lift truck can handle engine blocks, weldments, bundled pipe, drums in a sling, or any machine with a lifting eye instead of a pallet base. That changes how the truck behaves: a load hanging from a hook can swing, rotate and shift its effective center of gravity while the truck is moving, which a strapped pallet cannot. Buyers who treat a hook as a bolt-on convenience usually underestimate this. The six products in this category come from three brands and span $125 to $9,717. Most are model families rather than single SKUs — Vestil lists 4 hook plate models, 4 hoisting hook models and 8 overhead load lifter models — so the model table on each product page is where the capacity and price you actually want lives.

Hook plates are the entry point: a plate that captures a fork with a hook attached, offered rigid or swiveling. Vestil's LM-HP4-R is a rigid 4,000 lb plate at $173.60, LM-HP4-S is the 4,000 lb swivel version at $182.83, and LM-HP6-S steps up to 6,000 lb at $217.24. A swivel lets the load find its own orientation instead of fighting the rigging; a rigid hook holds position, which some operators prefer for repetitive picks.

Hoisting hooks such as Vestil's S-FORK-4-AT auto-tension swivel hook ($210.05) and the D-FORK-4-RL double rigid latch 4,000 lb unit ($226.32) engage both forks and add a latch across the throat. Overhead load lifters are the fork-mounted jib option — OLF-2-42 is a fixed 2,000 lb unit at $1,889.73, while OLA-2-42 ($2,139.90) and the OLA-2-36-DLX deluxe model are adjustable. Reach is the trade: extending a lifter moves the load further from the front axle, and rated capacity drops accordingly.

Matching a Forklift Hook to Your Truck

Three fit checks decide whether an attachment will work on your truck. First, fork pocket size — the Star Industries 1366 has a 6¾ in. x 3 in. ID pocket, so it accepts tines within those dimensions and nothing larger. Second, fork spread: the 1366 is set for a 20 in. center-to-center fork opening. Third, attachment weight, because it rides on the forks as part of the load; the 1366 has a 105 lb net weight and overall dimensions of 29 in. W x 9¾ in. H x 24¼ in. L. Note also that the Star line runs 6,000 to 22,000 lb across models, so confirm you are quoting the model you actually need.

Two capacities govern every lift: the attachment's rating and the truck's derated rating. OSHA 1910.178(a)(5) requires that trucks equipped with front-end attachments be marked to identify the attachments and show the approximate weight of the truck and attachment combination at maximum elevation with the load laterally centered. OSHA 1910.178(a)(4) requires the manufacturer's prior written approval for modifications and additions that affect capacity and safe operation. In practice, the hook is often not the limiting factor — the truck is.

Vacuum Lifting Versus Hook Lifting

The Abaco AFPVL300 is the outlier here. It attaches directly to standard forklift trucks and runs on compressed air, drawing from existing workshop compressed air systems rather than truck hydraulics, and it is built for stone slabs. Vacuum lifting suits flat, clean, non-porous material where a sling would mar the surface or where the piece has no lifting point at all. It is far less forgiving than a hook: pad seal condition, surface contamination and air supply all matter every cycle. ASME B30.20 covers below-the-hook lifting devices, including vacuum lifting devices, and is the reference to read before putting one into service.

Inspection, Rigging and Operator Requirements

A hook attachment is only half the rigging. The slings, shackles and chains you hang from it carry their own rules — OSHA 1910.184 covers slings, and ASME B30.9 addresses sling selection, use and inspection. ASME B30.10 addresses hooks, including inspection for cracks, wear and deformation, and it is the standard operators should be working from when deciding whether a hook stays in service. ANSI/ITSDF B56.1 covers low lift and high lift trucks, including provisions for attachments. Operator training is not optional: OSHA 1910.178(l) requires training and evaluation for powered industrial truck operators, and handling suspended loads is materially different from handling pallets. Vestil products in this category are made in the USA by Vestil Manufacturing and carry a 1-year limited warranty.
