Excavator Couplers & Adapter Systems

Excavator quick couplers and adapter systems let one machine run several attachments without pulling pins by hand. This collection carries four couplers and adapters from Amulet Manufacturing and Geith, priced from $1,095 to $3,025: a cab-operated hydraulic quick coupler, a tilt coupler with tilt range up to 180 degrees, a mechanical pin-puller mini-hitch coupler in T-1 steel, and the Amulet XBOOM adapter system that mounts skid steer attachments on an excavator. Fitment is set by machine weight, pin diameter and pin centers, so check your excavator class and your existing attachment pins before ordering.

Excavator Couplers and Adapter Systems: What This Collection Covers

A quick coupler mounts to the excavator stick and holds the attachment, so an operator can swap bucket, breaker, rake or grapple without driving pins out by hand. This collection lists four products from Amulet Manufacturing and Geith between $1,095 and $3,025, covering three distinct approaches to changing tools.

  • Geith Excavator Hydraulic Quick Coupler - coupling and release from the cab. The published model chart runs from the QC25-30H for 1-2 ton excavators through the QC100H for 30-40 ton machines, with pin diameters from 25 mm to 100 mm.
  • Geith Excavator Tilt Coupler - also called a tilting quick coupler, with tilt range up to 180 degrees, front and rear spring-retained safety locks and a variable pin centre. Listed compatibility is roughly 2 t to 35 t excavators, model-dependent, and the product data states ISO 13031 compliance.
  • Amulet Mini-Hitch Excavator Manual Quick Coupler - a mechanical, pin-puller design in T-1 steel, offered in 5 excavator weight classes from 1-3 tons up to 8-10 tons and 6 configurations, with machine weight compatibility up to 18,000 lbs for backhoe loaders and mini excavators.
  • Amulet XBOOM Excavator To Skid Steer Adapter System - carries skid steer attachments on an excavator, offered in 7 excavator weight classes from 1.5-1.7 ton machines through 5.4-6 ton machines.

Hydraulic vs. Manual Excavator Quick Couplers

The choice comes down to how often you change attachments and what the operator's time is worth. A manual coupler like the Amulet Mini-Hitch is cheaper to buy, has no hoses to route and nothing electrical to fail; the trade-off is that someone leaves the cab, works the pins and confirms engagement on every change. On a job where the bucket stays on all week, that is fine.

A hydraulic coupler is worth the added cost when the machine changes tools several times a shift - bucket to breaker to compactor on utility work, or bucket to grapple on demolition and clearing. It needs an auxiliary hydraulic circuit and an in-cab control; if your excavator was not ordered with auxiliary plumbing, budget for the install, and confirm the circuit is a dedicated, pressure-holding function rather than one shared with a thumb or breaker. Weigh the added weight and length too: anything between the stick and the bucket extends the load radius and trims what the machine can lift and break out.

Tilt Couplers: Grading Without Repositioning the Machine

A tilt coupler adds a powered tilt axis between the stick and the attachment. The Geith Excavator Tilt Coupler is listed with tilt range up to 180 degrees, which lets an operator slope a ditch bank, crown a driveway or trim to grade without repeatedly walking and re-setting the machine. On finish grading, slope work and trenching alongside curbs and structures, that saves passes and cuts the hand work behind the machine.

The cost is more than the purchase price. It is another hydraulic function to plumb and maintain, it adds weight at the end of the stick, and its pivot and locking components need inspection on the same schedule as the rest of the front end. Buyers who grade constantly but change tools rarely often get more from a tilt coupler than from a plain hydraulic one; buyers doing production digging with one bucket usually do not.

Excavator to Skid Steer Adapter Systems

If you already own skid steer attachments, an adapter system can put them on the excavator instead of buying a second set of tools with excavator pin mounts. The Amulet XBOOM Excavator To Skid Steer Adapter System is built for that, across 7 excavator weight classes from 1.5-1.7 ton up to 5.4-6 ton, with mount options including a blank weld-on plate, wedge-style coupler, pin-on / pin-grabber-style coupler and Wain-Roy / cross-pin-style coupler, plus adapter options for mini walk behind, mini-universal and standard universal plates.

Check two things before ordering. First, the mount option has to match what is on your machine - a wedge-style hitch and a pin-grabber hitch are not interchangeable, and the blank weld-on plate assumes you have someone to weld and fit it. Second, the plate style has to match your attachments, since mini-universal and standard universal are different interfaces. Hydraulic attachments also need flow and pressure the excavator can actually supply, which is a machine-by-machine question.

Sizing and Fitment: Pins, Weight Class and Attachment Compatibility

Coupler fitment is decided by three things: machine weight class, attachment pin diameter, and pin centers, the distance between the two attachment pins. Geith publishes a model-by-model chart for the hydraulic coupler:

Excavator weight (tons)Pin diameter (mm)Coupler model
1 - 225 / 30QC25-30H
2 - 435 / 40QC35-40H
4 - 845 / 50QC45-50H
7 - 1250 / 55 / 60QC50-55-60H
12 - 1660 / 65QC60-65H
16 - 2570 / 80QC70-80H
24 - 3590QC90H
30 - 40100QC100H

Amulet handles fitment by chart: the Mini-Hitch is listed as fitting excavator makes and models per the Amulet fitment chart, across 5 weight classes and 6 configurations. Either way, have your machine make, model and serial number, plus the pin diameter and pin centers of the buckets you plan to keep, before you order.

Safety, Inspection and Operator Practice

Unintended attachment release is the failure mode that matters with any quick coupler. ISO 13031, the international safety standard for quick couplers on earth-moving machinery, addresses that risk - it covers how a coupler retains the attachment and how the operator is made aware that an attachment is not fully locked. The Geith tilt coupler here is listed as ISO 13031 compliant with front and rear spring-retained locks.

Whatever you buy, the practice is the same: follow the manufacturer's engagement procedure exactly, then crowd the attachment against the ground or curl it back to confirm it is captured before swinging a load. Inspect pins, the locking wedge or hook, springs and hoses daily, and grease the coupler per the manual - a dry or worn locking mechanism is what turns a sound design into a dropped bucket. OSHA's construction rules for material handling equipment, 29 CFR 1926.600, require equipment to be shut down and secured against operation before repairs or manual lubrication, which applies directly to anyone working at the front end during a coupler change or service.
