Cargo Control & Load Bars

Cargo control and load bars keep freight where you put it — inside a trailer, on a pallet, or under a machine being shipped between sites. This collection carries 13 Vestil products from $101 to $8,563: cargo bars, hook and loop straps, polypropylene and steel strapping with the tools, dispensers and pneumatic sealers to run it, forklift tie-down clamps, chain, and plastic chain barricades for marking off areas. Semi-automatic and high-speed strapping machines cover higher-volume pallet lines. Everything here is Vestil, made in the USA, and carries a 1-year limited warranty.

What's in the Cargo Control & Load Bars Category

This category covers the hardware that restrains a load rather than lifts it. Three jobs sit inside it, and buyers usually need more than one. In-trailer restraint is handled by cargo bars, which brace between trailer walls to stop a partial load from shifting on the road. Unitizing — turning loose cartons or a stacked pallet into one rigid unit — is handled by polypropylene or steel strapping, applied by hand tools, a pneumatic strap sealer, or a strapping machine. Equipment and area control covers forklift tie-down clamps for securing a truck during transport, chain in a range of colors, and plastic chain barricades for cordoning off floor space. All 13 items here are Vestil, made in the USA, with a 1-year limited warranty.

Cargo Bars vs. Straps vs. Strapping: Choosing by Job

These three are not interchangeable, and mixing them up is the most common buying error in this category.

  • Cargo bars work by compression against fixed surfaces. They stop lateral and forward movement of a load that does not fill the trailer, and they come out and get reused every trip. They do nothing to hold an individual pallet together.
  • Strapping — poly or steel — is a consumable applied under tension and closed with a seal or weld. It unitizes the load itself so the pallet arrives as one piece. It is single-use and cut off at the destination.
  • Hook and loop straps are bundling devices for cables, hose, tarps and light kitting. They are not tensioned securement hardware and should not be treated as tiedowns.

A typical distribution operation uses all three: strapping on the pallet, cargo bars in the trailer, hook and loop straps for the loose items that ride along with it.

Polypropylene or Steel Strapping?

Polypropylene is the general-purpose choice. It stretches under load and recovers, which is what you want on compressible freight — cartons, bagged goods, mixed pallets that settle in transit. It is light to handle, safe to cut, and easy to run through a machine. Our poly strapping (ST) is stocked in seven models across color options, priced from $178.85 to $203.94 per coil at 12,900 ft.

Steel strapping is for rigid, heavy, high-edge-pressure loads that will not settle: coil, bar stock, castings, bundled lumber and brick. It has very little elongation, so it holds dimension but will go slack if the load compresses. It also demands sharper handling discipline — cut steel strap under tension recoils, and gloves and eye protection are the baseline. Match the tool to the material: poly and steel strapping tools (PKG) and the pneumatic strap sealer (PN) are specified by strap type and width, not chosen generically.

Hand Tools, Semi-Automatic, or High-Speed Strapping Machines

Volume decides this, not budget. Hand tooling with a wall-mounted strapping dispenser (STRAP-WALL, $472.04) makes sense at low, irregular throughput where an operator straps a few loads a shift. Once strapping becomes a fixed station on a line, machine time pays back in labor and in tension consistency — hand-tensioned straps vary operator to operator, and inconsistent tension is a real cause of in-transit load failure.

ModelTypePrice
S-2001Semi-automatic, 30 in.$1,829.61
DBA-130Semi-automatic pallet probe$6,375.95
ASM-3123Automatic high speed$8,562.62

The step from the S-2001 to the DBA-130 is not speed alone — a pallet probe machine passes strap under and around a palletized load without the operator threading it by hand, which is the slow, awkward part of strapping a full pallet. The ASM-3123 is the choice where cartons arrive continuously and cycle time governs the station.

Securing Equipment and Marking Off Areas

Forklift tie-down clamps (FTDC-6-4400, $696.90) address a specific problem: a lift truck riding on a trailer or flatbed has no convenient factory attachment points, and chaining through the mast or forks is not a substitute for a purpose-built clamp. FMCSA's cargo securement rules for heavy vehicles, equipment and machinery in 49 CFR 393.130 call for a minimum of four tiedowns, secured at the front and rear of the equipment, with accessory equipment such as the mast or attachments secured separately.

Chain and plastic chain barricades (PCB) do a different job — they define space rather than restrain freight. Color matters here. OSHA's safety color code in 29 CFR 1910.144 designates red for fire protection equipment and danger, and yellow for marking caution and physical hazards such as striking, stumbling and pinch points. Pick barricade and chain color to match the message you already use elsewhere in the facility rather than to whatever is on hand.

Buying Notes: Consumables, Sizing and Total Cost

Three things drive the real number on a cargo control quote. First, consumable run rate: a strapping machine is a one-time cost, but strap is ongoing, and coil footage and strap width should be checked against how many straps a pallet actually takes. Second, tool-to-strap compatibility: sealers, tensioners and machines are specified for a strap type and width, and buying a tool that does not match the strap in inventory is a common and avoidable mistake. Third, the operator side: cutting tools, gloves and eye protection for steel strapping, and enough dispenser stations that operators are not walking coils across the floor.

One boundary worth stating plainly: nothing in this category is overhead lifting equipment. Cargo securement hardware is rated for restraint, not for suspending a load; ASME B30.9 covers slings used for lifting, and lifting gear should be bought from that category rather than substituted from this one.
