What a Panel Cart Is Built to Do

A panel cart is a purpose-built mobile rack for flat, rigid, or sheet-form materials that don't sit flat or stable on a standard platform cart: drywall, plywood, glass, plastic sheet, mirrors, and large panels. Instead of a flat deck, the cart holds material either flat and stacked (horizontal style) or upright in angled slots (vertical style), so edges and faces don't rub or chip during transport. Choosing the wrong style for your material is one of the most common mistakes buyers make — a cart designed for stacked flat sheets doesn't protect glass or finished panels the way an angled vertical rack does, and vice versa.

Horizontal vs. Vertical Panel Cart Orientation

In this collection, the Vestil Horizontal Panel Cart (PANEL-H) carries 2,000 lb on a 64" x 31" flat platform, suited to stacking multiple sheets of drywall, plywood, or similar flat stock that can be laid on top of one another. The Vestil Vertical Panel Cart (PANEL-V) also carries 2,000 lb but on a 48" x 30" footprint with an angled, upright orientation — better for large panels, glass, or mirrors that shouldn't be stacked flat and benefit from a smaller floor footprint per unit moved. Neither cart's capacity or size should be assumed to extend beyond what's listed here; the two models are not interchangeable in application even though they share the same 2,000 lb rating.

Matching Capacity to the Load

Capacity varies significantly across this lineup, and matching the right cart to your load weight avoids both overloading and paying for more cart than you need.

CartCapacityFootprintPrice Range
Adjustable Panel Dollies (PLDL)1,000 lb21" x 15"$263.14 – $290.58
Horizontal Panel Cart2,000 lb64" x 31"$617.41
Vertical Panel Cart2,000 lb48" x 30"$653.03
Drywall & Panel Carts3,000 lb32" x 26"$383.73 – $605.22
Heavy-Duty Panel Cart (PRCT)4,000 lb2" x 36" – 32" x 26"$464.04 – $720.73

If your loads regularly approach the top of a cart's rated capacity, size up rather than running near the limit on every trip — repeated near-capacity use accelerates wear on casters and frame welds faster than occasional full loads.

Wheel and Caster Selection

The Vestil Drywall & Panel Carts are available with either rubber wheels (PRCT-S-MR) or glass-filled nylon wheels (PRCT-S-GN). As a general rule for material handling carts, rubber wheels roll quieter and are gentler on finished or coated floors, while glass-filled nylon and polyurethane wheels hold up better under sustained heavy loads and resist cuts from debris on rougher warehouse or job-site floors. Match the wheel material to where the cart will actually be used — a rubber-wheeled cart pushed daily over gravel or unfinished concrete with embedded debris will wear faster than one used on a smooth warehouse floor.

Panel Carts vs. Adjustable Panel Dollies

The Vestil Adjustable Panel Dollies (PLDL) are a different class of equipment from the full-size panel carts above: rated at 1,000 lb with a compact 21" x 15" footprint, they're built for moving individual panels or smaller sheet goods short distances, often in pairs (one dolly under each end of a long panel) rather than as a single mobile storage rack. If your operation moves a high volume of stacked or upright panels for storage and repeated staging, a horizontal, vertical, or heavy-duty cart is the better fit; if you're occasionally repositioning single panels or cabinets, a pair of adjustable dollies is often the more practical and lower-cost choice.

Operating and Maintenance Considerations

Manual material handling carts still fall under an employer's general safety obligations — under the OSH Act's General Duty Clause, employers must keep the workplace free of recognized hazards, which in practice means inspecting a cart's wheels, frame, and load rating before each use and keeping loads within the manufacturer's stated capacity. Before putting any panel cart into daily use, check that casters swivel and roll freely, that no weld points show visible cracking, and that the load being placed on the cart doesn't exceed the capacity listed for that specific model — capacity is not interchangeable across the different cart types in this collection even when footprints look similar. Keeping aisles clear and floors free of debris also reduces wear on wheels and lowers the chance of a loaded cart tipping on an obstruction.
