Auto Body Frame Racks

Auto body frame machines and frame racks pull collision damage back toward factory spec, and this category covers eight Katool units priced from $599 to $10,990. It spans full-length racks such as the 20 ft welded-steel KT-198L and the 22 ft KT-299U, the KT-310 platform rack rated at 60 kN of pull with a 3,000 kg (6,614 lbs) loading capacity, and portable frame pulling machines including the 5-ton KT-222, the 10-ton KT-CL150, and the 50 kN KT-SB288. Compare pull rating, vehicle fit, and available shop power and air before you commit to a format.

Auto Body Frame Machines and Frame Racks: What This Category Covers

Frame straightening equipment splits into two working formats, and both are represented here. A full frame rack is a fixed or drive-on platform that anchors the vehicle along a long rail so the pull can be taken against the whole body, not against a jack stand and a prayer. In this collection that is the KT-198L with its 20 ft welded steel frame rack, the KT-299U with a 22 ft working rail, and the KT-310, a platform-style rack listed at 3,320 mm (130.7") long and 880 mm (34.6") wide with a working height range of 110-1,700 mm (4.3-66.9").

The second format is the portable frame pulling machine: a wheeled or floor-standing tower with a hydraulic ram and chain that is positioned wherever the pull is needed. The KT-222 (5-ton), KT-CL150 (10-ton), KT-SB288 (50 kN), KT-YA260 (50 kN), and KT-255 fall into this group. All eight units in this category are Katool, and the $599 to $10,990 span across the collection largely tracks that split between portable pullers and full racks.

Portable Frame Machines vs. Full Frame Racks

The decision is about volume, anchoring, and floor space rather than force alone. A portable frame puller earns its place in a general repair shop that sees cosmetic and light structural work between mechanical jobs: it stores against a wall, it does not consume a bay full time, and it can be rolled to the vehicle instead of the vehicle being staged onto it. The KT-SB288 and KT-YA260 are both listed at 39.6 x 25.6 x 35.4 in and 143.3 lbs (65 kg), which is the practical appeal of the format — one technician can reposition the tower.

A full rack is the choice when structural repair is the business rather than a sideline. The rack gives you repeatable anchoring points, the ability to hold a vehicle in one setup through measure-pull-measure cycles, and room to work under the car. The trade-off is a dedicated footprint and a longer setup per vehicle. If your shop does structural work on unibody vehicles that require documented, measured repair, the rack format is what supports that workflow; portable frame machines are better read as a pulling tool than as a holding fixture.

Reading the Specs: Pull Rating, Lifting Capacity, and Vehicle Fit

Two different numbers get called "capacity" on this equipment and they are not interchangeable. Pulling force is what the ram and tower can apply to the damaged panel or rail. Lifting or loading capacity is the weight of vehicle the platform can carry. The KT-310 lists both separately: 60 kN pulling capacity with a 360-degree radius of pull, and a 3,000 kg (6,614 lbs) maximum loading capacity. The KT-299U lists a maximum lifting weight of 3.5 T (7,716 lb). Match the loading figure to the heaviest vehicle you intend to put on the deck, and the pull figure to the severity of work you take in.

Vehicle fit is the spec buyers check last and regret first. The KT-299U is listed for a maximum vehicle length of 5,200 mm (17.1 ft / 204.7 in) before repositioning, with a maximum longitudinal axis deviation under 100 mm (3.9 in) and a maximum center-of-gravity deviation under 500 mm (19.7 in). Those tolerances describe how the vehicle must sit on the rail, not just whether it physically fits.

Site Requirements: Floor, Power, and Air

Check three utilities before the freight arrives. First, electrical: the KT-310 is listed at 220V/380V rated voltage, which is a service question for most independent shops, not a plug-in. Second, compressed air: the KT-255 is listed as requiring a 0.8 MPa air supply, and the KT-299U lists an intake air pressure range starting at 0.8 MPa. If you do not already run a shop compressor that holds that pressure under load, budget for one. Third, hydraulics: the KT-299U lists a maximum hydraulic working pressure of 25 MPa (3,626 psi), and the KT-SB288, KT-YA260, and KT-255 each list a 70 MPa hydraulic figure. These are working pressures for the machine's own system, not something you supply.

The floor matters as much as the utilities. Anchored racks transfer pull loads into the slab, so slab thickness and condition should be confirmed against the manufacturer's installation instructions for the specific model before anchors go in. Units that are self-contained and manually operated sidestep some of this: the KT-SB288 is listed as manual operation with no external air source required, which is the simplest possible install.

Anchoring, Measuring, and Safe Operation

A pull is only as good as the anchoring and the measurement that verifies it. Clamping is what keeps the load in the structure rather than in the chain, which is why the KT-CL150 lists high-strength vehicle anchoring clamps and adjustable multi-angle towers as part of the package, and why the KT-SB288 ships with a pulling tower, hand pump, a 3.5 m chain with hook, and a six-claw hook. Confirm which clamps, chains, and hooks are included with the specific model you order rather than assuming a full kit.

On the regulatory side, OSHA 1910.132 requires employers to assess workplace hazards and provide appropriate personal protective equipment, which covers eye and face protection during pulls and cutting. OSHA 1910.252 sets general requirements for welding, cutting and brazing, including fire prevention and ventilation, all of which apply to structural repair work performed on or near a rack. OSHA 1910.242(b) limits compressed air used for cleaning to 30 psi with effective chip guarding and PPE, which matters in shops that blow down panels between pulls. Beyond the OSHA rules, the vehicle manufacturer's published repair procedures govern what can be pulled, sectioned, or replaced on a given model.

What Buyers Commonly Get Wrong

Three mistakes come up repeatedly. Buying on pull rating alone: a higher kN or ton figure does nothing if the platform cannot carry the vehicles you service, or if the vehicle does not fit within the rail length and deviation limits the manufacturer specifies. Ignoring the utilities: a 220V/380V machine or one requiring a sustained 0.8 MPa air supply can sit crated for weeks waiting on an electrician or a larger compressor. And treating measurement as optional: pulling without a way to verify the result turns structural repair into guesswork. Decide how you will measure before you decide which machine to buy.
