Engines & Engine Parts

This engines & engine parts collection covers air-cooled, 4-stroke OHV replacement engines and the small hardware that goes with them, priced from $1 to $1,968. It includes horizontal-shaft engines with 3/4" and 1" keyed shafts, vertical-shaft engines with 1" keyed shafts, recoil and electric-start models, and 3/4" and 1" engine key stock. Several models list an automatic low-oil sensor and run on regular unleaded, 86 octane or higher. Before ordering a repower, confirm shaft diameter, shaft orientation, mounting pattern and start system against the machine you are fixing.

Engines & Engine Parts for Repowering Small Equipment

A repower is usually the cheapest way to keep a pressure washer, compactor, pump or mower frame in service when the powerplant is worn out rather than the machine. The nine listings in this collection are cataloged under BE Power Equipment and carry Kohler, Powerease and Vanguard model names. All are air-cooled, 4-stroke Over Head Valve (OHV) engines with keyed shafts, which is the configuration most light commercial equipment uses. The two key stock listings cover the loose parts that are easy to lose during a swap.

Horizontal vs. Vertical Shaft Engines

Shaft orientation is not a preference, it is a hard compatibility requirement. A horizontal-shaft engine sends power out the side of the crankcase and is what you find on pressure washer pumps, plate compactors, water pumps, generators, log splitters and belt-driven implements, where the driven component sits beside the engine on the same frame. A vertical-shaft engine sends power straight down through the deck, which is how walk-behind and riding mowers, some blowers and certain deck-mounted assemblies are built.

The two are not interchangeable. Crankcase oiling, mounting flange design and the governor linkage are all laid out for one orientation. This collection carries both: horizontal-shaft units such as the Powerease R420 and Vanguard 400, and vertical-shaft units such as the Powerease RV550D and RV740D, both with 1" keyed vertical shafts.

How to Spec a Replacement Engine

Buyers most often get burned by measuring only one dimension. Work through the full list before you commit:

  • Shaft diameter and keyway. The engines here use 3/4" or 1" keyed shafts. Measure the old shaft with a caliper, not a tape.
  • Shaft length and any tapped end hole. Pump adapters, clutches and pulleys all depend on usable shaft length and the bolt in the shaft end.
  • Mounting bolt pattern. Compare hole spacing on the base or flange against the frame you are bolting to.
  • Orientation. Horizontal or vertical, per the section above.
  • Start system. Electric-start models need a harness, a battery and charging capability on the machine. The Powerease RV740D listing notes that its electric start connects to the equipment's starting harness, so the machine side has to already be set up for it.
  • Controls and accessories. Throttle type, fuel tank position, muffler clearance and air cleaner height decide whether the shroud or guard still closes.

Shipping weight matters for handling as much as freight cost. The RV550D lists a package weight of 82 lbs and the RV740D lists 90 lbs, which is a two-person lift onto most equipment frames.

Fuel, Ethanol and Oil Protection

Every engine in this collection with a published fuel recommendation calls for regular unleaded gasoline, 86 octane or higher, with ethanol blends up to 10% acceptable. The Powerease RV550D listing goes further and states it runs best with no ethanol. That is consistent with how small equipment fails in the field: ethanol attracts water and can degrade older fuel lines, carburetor gaskets and diaphragms, and the damage usually shows up after storage rather than during use.

Note that the EPA's partial waiver allowing E15 applies to certain model-year light-duty vehicles and specifically does not cover nonroad or small off-road engines, so avoid pumps labeled E15 or higher. For seasonal equipment, either run the carburetor dry or treat the fuel per the engine manufacturer's manual.

Several models here list an automatic low-oil sensor, including the Kohler SH270, Vanguard 400, RV550D and RV740D. The sensor shuts the engine down when oil level drops below a safe point. It protects against catastrophic damage but it is not an oil-change reminder, and it does not detect dirty oil. Follow the service interval printed in the engine's own manual.

Emissions Compliance and How Power Is Rated

Small gasoline engines sold in the US are regulated. EPA emissions standards for small nonroad spark-ignition engines appear at 40 CFR Part 1054, and the California Air Resources Board runs a separate Small Off-Road Engine (SORE) program, which is why some engines carry a California-specific label or restriction. Check the engine label and the listing before buying for a California site.

Horsepower figures also deserve scrutiny. SAE standards J1940 and J1349 define how small engine power is measured and corrected, and manufacturers may quote gross rather than net output at the shaft. The Powerease R420 and R420-18A list 420cc and 12.6 HP, and the R225 lists 223cc and 6.03 HP; compare displacement alongside horsepower when you are cross-shopping, since displacement is harder to present favorably.

Engine Key Stock and Small Parts

Key stock transmits torque between the crankshaft and whatever is mounted on it, and it is the single part most likely to go missing during a swap or shear under a shock load. This collection carries 1" and 3/4" engine key stock, matching the two shaft sizes used across the engines listed above. Both listings note that the actual product may vary from the images shown on the website.

Order key stock with the engine rather than after. A machine down for a $1 part is the same lost day as a machine down for a $1,968 part.
