Crossover platforms are fixed access structures that carry foot traffic up, over, and back down across a permanent obstruction — a conveyor line, a pipe rack, a cable tray, a spill containment berm, a machine base, or a low wall. Without one, the traffic pattern usually degrades into a long walk around the obstruction, which quietly costs labor hours every shift, or into people stepping directly on and over equipment. OSHA 1910.22 requires walking-working surfaces to be maintained in a safe condition, and a purpose-built crossover platform is how most plants close out an improvised route permanently.
Everything in this collection is Ballymore U-Design, built by Tri-Arc Manufacturing, and it is sold as individual components rather than as one fixed part number. Stair units, turn platforms, bridge spans, crossover platforms and support legs are priced from $220 to $2,358, so you assemble a crossover that matches your obstruction instead of forcing the obstruction to match a stock model.
Size from the obstruction, not from the catalog. The number that governs the whole configuration is the vertical clearance you need under the bridge span: the height of the obstruction plus anything that rides on top of it, plus the clearance a maintenance tech needs to reach past it. Once that clearance is set, platform height follows, and the stair height follows from platform height.
Two numbers appear on almost every listing here and they are not interchangeable. Platform height is the walking surface. Overall height includes the guardrail above it, and it is the number to check against sprinkler heads, light fixtures, door headers, and overhead conveyor. A U-Design turn platform at a 90 in. platform height carries a 132 in. overall height — well over eleven feet — and that has to clear whatever is above the aisle.

Every U-Design configuration in this collection is available at a 50-, 75-, or 90-degree incline, and this is the decision buyers most often get wrong. The 50-degree incline has the largest floor footprint and the easiest climb. The 75-degree option cuts the footprint. The 90-degree option has the smallest footprint of the three and climbs like a ladder.
OSHA 1910.25(b)(2) requires standard stairs to be installed at an angle between 30 and 50 degrees from the horizontal, which is why the 50-degree configuration is the one that behaves like a staircase — climbed facing forward, hands free. The steeper options are climbed differently and are covered by different rules; OSHA 1910.23 addresses ladders. If anyone will cross this carrying a toolbox, a parts bin, or a sample, buy the footprint and take the 50-degree incline. Saving two feet of aisle is a poor trade against a crossing people avoid.
Serrated grating is the aggressive option. The open pattern sheds oil, water, coolant and chips, and the serrations bite through a film on the tread. It is the default for wet or oily process areas. Perforated tread has smaller openings, still drains, feels better underfoot on a long shift, and keeps dropped small parts and hardware from falling straight through onto the equipment below — worth considering when the crossover passes over a conveyor or an open machine. Grip surface, offered on the 40 in. crossover platform, is a punched one-piece plate. ANSI A1264.1 addresses slip resistance for workplace walking and working surfaces and is the reference to hand your safety group if the tread choice becomes an argument.
The U-Design process is four steps: select the incline, the stair height, the bridge span, and the configuration. Because components are sold separately, the same obstruction can be solved several ways. A straight-over crossing needs stairs on both ends and a bridge span between them. Where the far side of the obstruction is a wall, a rack face, or a blocked aisle, a turn platform lets the descent run parallel to the obstruction instead of away from it.
Bridge spans in this collection carry a 24 in. platform width and a 44 in. overall height. Long spans need intermediate support, which is what the aluminum support legs do — they are offered from 20 to 81 in. in overall height at 30 in. or 36 in. widths and are rated at 500 lb, lower than the 1,000 lb rating on the steel platforms and spans. Match leg height to the bridge, not to the platform.
Fall exposure is the reason guardrails are on these units. OSHA 1910.28(b)(1) generally requires fall protection for general industry walking-working surfaces with an unprotected edge 4 feet or more above a lower level. OSHA 1910.29(b)(1) specifies a guardrail top edge height of 42 inches, plus or minus 3 inches, above the walking surface, and 1910.29(b)(3) requires the top rail to withstand a force of at least 200 pounds applied downward or outward.
Three mistakes account for most returns. First, measuring to the top of the obstruction instead of to the required clearance under the bridge, then discovering a valve handle or a motor sits in the way. Second, ignoring overall height and colliding with sprinklers or a door header. Third, ordering the steepest incline to save aisle space and ending up with a crossing operators walk around anyway. Also confirm the floor: a crossover has to be installed on a level, sound surface and anchored per the manufacturer's instructions before it carries traffic.
