Choosing Spill Containment and Drum Storage for Your Site

Secondary containment exists to buy you time. A drum gasket weeps overnight, a transfer pump is left running, a forklift tine clips a tote — in each case the question is whether the liquid stays in a basin you can pump out or reaches a floor drain you have to report. That is why containment is specified by the container it sits under, not by the shelf it replaces. Before comparing models, write down three things: the number and orientation of containers at that station, the total volume sitting there, and whether the location is indoors on sealed concrete or outdoors where rain collects. Those three answers narrow the field faster than any feature list.

Sizing Secondary Containment: Check the Rule Before the Catalog

Capacity is usually set by regulation, not preference, so start there. For hazardous waste container storage areas, EPA rules at 40 CFR 264.175 require a containment system that holds either 10 percent of the total volume of the containers or the volume of the largest container, whichever is greater. For oil storage at facilities covered by EPA's SPCC rule, 40 CFR 112.8(c)(2) requires containment around bulk storage tanks sized for at least the capacity of the largest single container, plus enough freeboard to hold precipitation when the area is uncovered. OSHA 1910.106 governs the storage and handling of flammable liquids, and NFPA 30, the Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code, addresses containment and drainage in liquid storage areas. Confirm which of these applies to your material and your facility, then match a basin sump volume to it. A pallet that fits the drums but undersizes the sump fails an inspection just as surely as no pallet at all.

Steel or Polyethylene: Match the Basin to the Chemistry

Material choice follows what you are storing. Steel basins handle solvents, fuels, hot work areas and forklift traffic well, and they tolerate sparks and heat that plastics do not — the VSRB and HSRB lines here are steel by construction. Polyethylene and similar plastics resist acids, caustics and salt solutions that corrode bare or painted steel, which is why many chemical stores run poly under the corrosives and steel under the fuels. Two practical rules apply either way: check your product's Safety Data Sheet, Section 7 and Section 10, for incompatible materials before you commit, and never mix incompatible chemistries in one shared sump. If a basin's construction material is not listed in the specification table, confirm it on the individual product page rather than assuming.

Access, Drainage and Everyday Handling

The best-sized basin still fails if operators route around it. Upright storage on a spill pallet suits drums that are pumped from the top; horizontal basins suit drums dispensed by gravity through a faucet, and they need clearance in front for a container and a drip pan. Drains, like those on the OTC fuel tank containment units, make it far easier to clear rainwater or condensate from an outdoor sump — but a drain plug left open converts secondary containment into a funnel, so assign that check to someone. Consider forklift and pallet jack approach paths, door swing, eyewash proximity and how the unit will be washed down. Where a curb line is the right answer instead of a basin — protecting a doorway, an electrical panel or a rack upright from traffic — the FSC inline floor curb serves that purpose.

Inspection, Maintenance and Common Buying Mistakes

Containment is inspected, not installed and forgotten. Walk the stations on a set schedule and look for standing liquid in sumps, cracked or gouged decks, corrosion at steel welds and seams, missing grates, plugged or open drains, and drums stacked beyond what the unit is rated to carry. Keep a record; auditors ask for one. The mistakes that cost buyers the most are predictable: sizing to the drum footprint instead of the required sump volume, buying indoor-style open containment for an outdoor tank that will fill with rain, using one shared basin for incompatible chemicals, and skipping overpack capacity so there is nothing on hand when a drum does fail.
