How Trailer Movers and Yard Equipment Fit Your Operation

Trailer movers exist because using a road tractor to shuttle trailers across a yard is expensive and slow. A dedicated mover lets one person reposition a trailer at a dock door, pull it clear for a driver swap, or square it up for loading. The category splits along power source: self-propelled powered units driven by a walking operator, and manual or hitch-mounted movers that borrow power from another machine, usually a forklift or a pickup. Around those movers sits the yard hardware that keeps a spotted trailer from moving — stabilizing jacks under the landing gear, chocks against the wheels, parking hoops to protect dock equipment, and lock systems that control who can pull a trailer away.

Choosing a Trailer Mover: Power Source, Weight and Yard Surface

Start with the heaviest trailer you actually move and how far you move it. The Vestil Gas Powered Trailer Mover (PTM-GPT) is rated at 12,000 lb and lists at $8,393.94 — a self-contained unit for yards where no forklift is free or where trailers have to travel well away from the building. The Vestil Hitch Trailer Mover line (HM) is rated at 2,000 lb, runs $234.86 to $413.78, and comes in six models covering 1-7/8 in., 2 in. and 2-5/16 in. ball sizes. Those are for light trailers nudged a short distance, not for loaded semi-trailers.

Surface matters as much as weight. Powered movers lose traction on gravel, ice or a sloped apron; smooth, well-drained concrete is the friendly case. If your yard is broken asphalt or unpaved, plan on a rough-terrain approach — the Vestil Rough Terrain Ept Double Ball Hitch Attachment is built for that ground. Grade is the other trap: a trailer that rolls easily on flat ground behaves very differently on an apron pitched for drainage, and that changes both the mover you need and the chocking behind it.

Securing a Spotted Trailer: Chocks, Locks and Parking Hoops

OSHA 1910.178(k) requires that when a powered industrial truck is driven onto a highway truck or trailer, the brakes be set and wheel chocks or an equivalent means be used to prevent the vehicle from moving, and the same section calls for wheel stops or other positive protection when loading railcars. That rule is the practical reason this hardware sits alongside the movers. Our Vestil Universal Steel Rail Chock (FRC-2, $134.53) is a flag rail chock with an adjustable height leg for railcar work, and the Vestil Heavy Duty Parking Hoops shield dock equipment and building corners from being clipped during a spot.

Trailer lock systems address a different risk: an unauthorized or premature pull-away while people are working inside the trailer. The Vestil Trailer Lock Systems (TL) group spans nine models from $222.95 to $5,828.97, a range that runs from accessories such as cold-weather hydraulic oil up to full restraint hardware. Whichever method you use, OSHA 1910.178(l) also requires that powered industrial truck operators be trained and evaluated before working unsupervised — worth confirming before a new mover joins the yard.

Trailer Stabilizing Jacks: Sizing and Placement

A stabilizing jack keeps a parked trailer from nosing down or bouncing when a forklift drives in and out of it. The Vestil Trailer Stabilizing Jacks line is the deepest group here: 22 models, capacities from 5,000 to 50,000 lb, priced from $152.62 to $844.17. The economy round-base SJ-35 (5,000 lb, $152.62) and the flat-base SJ-40 cover light parking duty, while the higher-capacity models suit loaded trailers seeing repeated forklift traffic.

Two placement points buyers get wrong. First, a jack stabilizes, it does not lift — it supports a trailer already resting on its landing gear, so sizing to the trailer's gross weight rather than the nose load it actually carries usually means buying more jack than the job needs. Second, base type follows the surface: a round base concentrates load and can sink into hot asphalt, while a flat base spreads it. If your apron softens in summer, a flat base or a bearing plate under the foot is cheaper than repaving.

Fork Truck Bases and Hitch Attachments: Using the Lift You Already Own

If a forklift is available, a fork-mounted base turns it into a spotter for a fraction of the cost of a powered unit. The Vestil Fork Truck Bases with Optional Tow Balls and Pintle Hook group covers eight models from $215.94 to $754.95, including the FWTS-3-4000 fifth wheel trailer spotter, the RPB-2 rubber push bumper for a 2 in. receiver, and the HOOK-BASE-32 steel fork-mounted hook base. The Vestil Adj Manual Winch Stack Single Ball Hitch Attachment adds winching for pulling a trailer into position rather than pushing it.

The limiting factor is the forklift, not the attachment. A fork-mounted base changes the truck's load center and can affect its rated capacity, and ANSI/ITSDF B56.1, the safety standard for low lift and high lift industrial trucks, addresses the use of attachments and the requirement that a truck be marked for the attachment it carries. Check the data plate and the truck manufacturer's approval before hanging a spotter off the forks, and treat outdoor yard work on a cushion-tire indoor forklift as a traction problem waiting to happen.
