How car scissor lifts compare with two-post and four-post lifts

A car scissor lift lifts on runways or platforms that sit under the frame rails or pinch welds, so there are no columns beside the vehicle and no arms to swing into position. That matters most in bays where a technician has to open both doors, in shops with low or obstructed ceilings, and in buildings where nothing tall can be anchored to the floor. The trade-off is undercarriage access: the scissor mechanism sits directly under the center of the vehicle, so exhaust, driveshaft and transmission work is more restricted than on a two-post lift. Drive-on runway models also leave the wheels loaded unless you add rolling jacks. A two-post lift gives wheels-free access and open sightlines under the whole car, but it needs headroom for the columns and an anchored slab; a four-post is the easiest to load and best for storage, but it eats floor space permanently. Scissor vehicle lifts sit between them, and for tire, brake, body and quick-service work they are usually the faster lift to cycle.

Low-rise, mid-rise and full-rise scissor vehicle lifts

The three heights do different jobs. Low-rise lifts, such as the AMGO LR06 portable low-rise and the AMGO LR10, get the car high enough for wheels, brakes, detailing and body work with the technician seated or kneeling. Mid-rise lifts raise it to roughly working-bench height: the AMGO MRL09 reaches 47 1/4″ and the AMGO EM06 reaches about 40–43″, which suits tire, suspension and body shops. A full-rise scissor auto lift gets a technician upright underneath — the AMGO XL-7 reaches 78 3/4″ from a 4 5/8″ minimum height, and takes 50 seconds to do it.

Mounting is the second decision. Surface-mount lifts bolt to the existing slab and can be moved later with more effort; a flush-mount or in-floor model such as the AMGO XL-9F is recessed so the runways sit level with the floor, which keeps the bay usable for anything else and removes the approach ramps. Flush and in-floor installations cost more than surface mounting because they involve cutting and forming a pit, so budget the concrete work separately from the lift price.

Capacity and power source

Capacity in this collection runs from 6,000 lb on the AMGO MR06 and EM06 to 16,000 lb on the AMGO AX-16A alignment scissor lift, with 12,000 lb models (AX-12, AX-12A, DX-12A) covering heavy trucks, vans and EVs. Size to the heaviest vehicle you actually expect, not the average, and remember that battery-electric vehicles are heavier than the combustion versions of the same model.

Power source changes what you need at the bay. The Katool KT-X85 runs on 220 V AC / 60 Hz single phase with a 2.0 HP motor, as do the AMGO XL-7, MRL09 and EM06, all rated 2.0 HP. The Katool KT-X80 is air-driven and needs 90–120 psi, which is worth checking against your compressor's sustained output rather than its peak rating. The Katool KT-X95 uses a hydraulic power unit. If you have no dedicated 220 V circuit in the bay, electrical work belongs in the install budget.

Site requirements: floor, footprint and headroom

Measure the bay before you compare prices. Footprints vary widely: the AMGO XL-7 is 80″ overall length and 76 3/4″ overall width, while the AMGO MRL09 is 156 11/16″ overall length including its ramps — more than twice as long. Width between runways is 29 1/2″ on both, which determines how the vehicle straddles the lift. Gross weight matters for handling and rigging during installation: 2,006 lbs for the XL-7 and 1,821 lbs for the MRL09.

For headroom, add the lift's maximum height to the height of the tallest vehicle you service, plus clearance for lights and door tracks. Concrete requirements are model-specific: each lift's installation manual states the slab thickness, strength and cure time it requires, and ANSI/ALI ALIS is the standard covering automotive lift installation and service. Do not assume an existing slab is adequate because another lift once sat on it.

Safety locks, certification and inspection

Every lift here uses mechanical locks that hold the load independently of hydraulic or air pressure — the Katool KT-X85 has automatic locks, the KT-X95 adjustable safety locks, and the AMGO EM06 a mechanical hand-release safety lock. The relevant standards are worth knowing by name: ANSI/ALI ALCTV covers the construction, testing and validation of automotive lifts, and the Automotive Lift Institute runs the third-party certification program behind the ALI Certified label. ANSI/ALI ALOIM covers lift operation, inspection and maintenance, and ALI recommends inspection by a qualified lift inspector on a regular schedule. Train anyone who operates the lift on correct lift-point placement for the vehicles you handle.

Buying on price without buying the wrong lift

The most common mistake is comparing sticker prices across lift classes. A portable low-rise unit and a 16,000 lb alignment lift are not competing products, and the cheaper one is not a bargain if it cannot reach the height your work needs. The second mistake is ignoring install cost — anchoring, electrical or air supply, and, for flush-mount models, concrete work. The third is buying to today's vehicle mix; capacity headroom is cheap at purchase and impossible to add later. Set the lift class and capacity first, then compare price within that class.
