Most sizing mistakes start the same way — a buyer reads the headline wattage in the product name and assumes that is what the machine delivers continuously. It is not. Peak or maximum output is a short-duration figure; running output is what the set holds under sustained load. In our catalog the 9,000 Watt Generator - BE9000 is rated 9,000 watts peak and 6,300 watts running, and the 11,000 Watt Generator - BE11000 lists 11,000 watts maximum against 7,200 watts running. Add up the running loads you expect to have on at once, then buy above that total rather than at it.
Motor-driven equipment — pumps, compressors, hydraulic power units — pulls a surge at startup well above its running current. Read the locked-rotor or starting figure on the equipment nameplate instead of applying a rule of thumb, because it varies with motor design and with whether the load is under pressure at start. If you are powering a charger for an electric forklift or pallet truck, the charger's input rating is the number that matters, not the truck's. Keep in mind that OSHA 1910.178(g) sets requirements for battery changing and charging areas, including ventilation and provisions for flushing spilled electrolyte; running the charger off a generator does not change those obligations.

ANSI C84.1 lists 480Y/277V as a standard nominal three-phase system voltage for US industrial service, which is why so much plant equipment and so many larger motors are wired for it. A 480V generator lets that equipment run on temporary or remote power without a step-up transformer. Our 480V models come from Makinex: the GEN-16P-MS-480 at 16 kW, the GEN-23P-MS-480, the GEN-32P-US-V2 at 32 kW, and the 1212 series listed for 240 and 480 volt use.
On the 240V side, the Makinex generator range includes the GEN-16P-MS-240 and the GEN-9P-US-240, plus the GEN-23P-MS-240 dual-phase gasoline unit. The GEN-16P-MS-240 is specified at 16 kW rated, 240 V, dual-phase with both three-phase and single-phase outlets, running a Honda GX-690 engine, at a net weight of 342 lbs. Confirm the voltage and the phase your tools require before ordering — a single-phase load and a three-phase load are not interchangeable, and a unit that offers both outlet types will not deliver full rated output on one leg alone.
A conventional generator ties engine speed directly to output frequency, so the engine holds a fixed speed whatever the load. An inverter set rectifies the output and rebuilds the waveform electronically, which lets the engine throttle down at light load and produces a cleaner sine wave. That matters for anything with sensitive electronics — laptops, diagnostic equipment, variable-frequency drives, battery chargers with switching power supplies. It also means quieter running and lower fuel burn when the load is small, which is the common case on a service truck.

The tradeoff is cost per watt: inverter electronics add price over an open-frame set of the same output. If you are feeding resistive loads, work lights and simple motors on a job site, a conventional frame unit like the BE7000 or BE9000 is usually the better value.
Fuel flexibility buys you options when one supply runs short, but output is not identical across fuels. The 12,500 Watt Tri-Fuel Generator - BE12500T is a clear example from our own data: 12,500 watts peak and 9,000 watts running on gasoline, 11,000 peak and 8,000 running on propane, and 9,000 peak and 7,200 running on natural gas. Size against the fuel you will actually use most, not the best-case number.
Propane stores indefinitely and avoids the stale-fuel problems that plague seasonal gasoline units. Natural gas needs a plumbed supply, so it suits a fixed installation rather than a trailer, but it never needs refueling mid-run. Straight gasoline units such as the BE3800, BE4800 and BE11000 remain the simplest to service. The BE11000 lists fuel consumption of 3.7 L/hr (1 gal/hr), which is the figure to use when you are planning tank capacity and refueling intervals for a shift.
Carbon monoxide is the hazard that kills people with generators, and it is entirely a siting problem. Portable generators are outdoor equipment — never run one inside a warehouse, dock, garage or partially enclosed space, regardless of open doors or fans. ANSI/PGMA G300, the safety and performance standard for portable generators, addresses CO shutoff provisions, and several of our units carry that protection: the BE11000 lists a carbon monoxide detector with automatic shutdown alongside automatic low-oil shutdown.
For grounding on construction sites, OSHA 1926.404(f)(3) sets out when the frame of a portable generator may serve as the grounding electrode and when a separate connection is required — worth reading before your first use rather than after an inspection. If the generator will feed a building's wiring rather than cord-connected loads, NFPA 70 (the National Electrical Code) covers generators in Article 445 and optional standby systems in Article 702; a listed transfer switch is what prevents backfeed onto utility lines. Noise also drives where you can park a unit: the Makinex GEN-16P-MS-240 is specified at 72 dB at idle and 78 dB at full load, which is a real consideration near occupied space.
