Manual Chain Hoists: What They Do and When to Choose One

A manual chain hoist lifts with hand power alone. The operator pulls a loop of hand chain, gearing multiplies that effort onto a lift wheel that reels the load chain, and a load brake holds position the moment pulling stops. There is no cord to run and no air to plumb, which is why manual chain hoists stay in maintenance shops, on job sites, in agricultural buildings and on rental fleets long after electric hoists have been specified for production work.

The trade-off is speed and duty cycle. A manual chain hoist suits intermittent lifting: pulling a pump, setting a motor, holding a fixture during a repair. If the same lift happens many times a shift, a powered hoist repays its higher purchase price in labor. Choose manual when lifts are occasional, when the pick point moves, or when the location has no reliable power.

Sizing a Manual Chain Hoist: Capacity, Lift Height and Headroom

Three numbers decide the model. Rated capacity comes first — the Bison Lifting units here run 1/2, 1, 2, 3, 5 and 10 ton, while the Vestil HCH, PHCH and Economy series are rated 1,000 to 10,000 lb. Size to the heaviest load you will ever pick, including slings, spreader bars and any below-the-hook device, not to the average load.

Lift height is the distance from the hook in its raised position to the lowest point you must reach. Vestil encodes capacity and lift in the model number: HCH-1-10 is a 1,000 lb hoist with 10 ft of lift, HCH-1-15 the same capacity with 15 ft. Bison also lists a 1/2 ton black chain hoist with 20 ft of lift. Order the lift you need — adding chain later is not a field modification.

Headroom is the vertical space consumed between the beam and the load hook when the hoist is fully raised, and it comes straight off the top of your usable lift. Load Chain, Brakes and Overload Protection

Chain grade matters more than finish. Bison's overload-protected models specify Grade 80 alloy steel load chain — heat-treated on the CH50-OL. Finish is a corrosion decision: Bison offers each capacity in both a galvanized chain and a black chain version, with identical ratings. Galvanized is the pick for outdoor beams, washdown bays, marine and agricultural exposure; black chain is suited to dry, sheltered indoor service.

Braking and overload protection are two different things. The CH30-OL uses a double pawl Weston-style load brake and the CH50-OL a dual pawl brake — in both, the load itself sets the brake as soon as hand effort stops. Overload protection is separate: the CH50-OL carries an integrated mechanical slip clutch that slips instead of letting an operator pull past the rated load. Bison lists ASME B30.16 and ANSI/ASME HST-2 compliance for the CH50-OL and a 12-month warranty on both overload models; the Vestil hoists are made in the USA by Vestil Manufacturing with a 1-year limited warranty.

Standards, Inspection and Operator Practice

ASME B30.16 covers overhead underhung hoists, including hand chain hoists, and addresses marking, inspection and operating practice, while ANSI/ASME HST-2 is the performance standard for hand chain manually operated chain hoists. In construction work, OSHA 29 CFR 1926.554 requires that overhead hoists be used within their rated load, that the load be attached by slings or other approved devices, and that the supporting structure be able to carry the load. Rigging has its own rules: OSHA 1910.184 covers slings and ASME B30.9 addresses sling inspection and use.

In daily practice, inspect the load chain for stretch, gouges, twist and corrosion before use, check that the hook throat is not opened and the latch closes, and confirm the brake holds on a test lift. Never wrap the load chain around a load as a sling, and never add a cheater bar to the hand chain — if the hoist will not lift with normal hand effort, the load is too heavy or something is wrong.
