What a semi electric pallet stacker does that a manual one cannot

A semi electric stacker — also listed as a semi electric stacker truck or semi electric straddle stacker — splits the two jobs a stacker has to do. Travel is manual: an operator pushes, pulls and steers the unit across the floor. Lifting is electric: a DC motor drives the hydraulic pump, so a full-height raise takes a button press instead of dozens of pump strokes. Against a fully manual stacker, that removes the largest single source of operator fatigue and makes repeated high-lift cycles realistic. Against a fully electric walkie stacker, you give up powered travel and long push distances, and in exchange you get a lighter machine, a smaller battery, fewer drive components to service and a lower price. Semi-electric is the right answer when lifts are frequent but travel is short: a few pallet positions, a mezzanine edge, a machine infeed, a delivery van.

Fork-over vs. straddle leg: the fit question that comes first

A fork-over stacker, such as the GNT G33S or the EKKO EA15C, carries its support legs directly beneath the forks. It is more compact and less expensive, but it can only pick loads that leave clear space under the deck — open-bottom stringer pallets, skids and machine bases. It will not take a closed-bottom or full-perimeter-base pallet.

A straddle-leg stacker, such as the GNT G33EA or the Ballymore straddle-leg walkies, runs its legs outside the load. The legs pass around the pallet, so closed-bottom pallets, drums on skids and odd containers are all workable, and the wider stance helps stability at height. The trade is footprint: the legs add width and the truck needs more room to line up on the load.

Where the legs adjust, check the range against the pallets you actually receive. The EKKO EA15A-138 has adjustable legs spanning 35 to 51 in with overall fork width adjustable from 8.66 to 32 in; the EA15D spans 44.5 to 59.1 in at the legs and 8 to 32.7 in at the forks. Measure your inbound freight rather than assuming everything arrives on the 48 by 40 in GMA pallet defined by the Grocery Manufacturers Association.

Matching capacity and lift height to the work

Buy capacity for your heaviest routine load, not the average one, and remember rated capacity applies at the rated load center — 20 in on the EKKO EA15A-138 and 24 in on the EA15D. A load whose center of gravity sits farther out derates the truck.

The walkie stackers here run from 500 lb on the Ballymore BALLYPAL-STK48BC with its 20 by 35 in ball transfer conveyor table up to 3,300 lb on the EKKO and EOSLift units. Two Vestil families sit apart from that pattern: the PMPS pallet master/servers are rated 4,000 lb and are positioners rather than high-lift stackers, and the gas-powered all-terrain pallet trucks and stackers cover 2,000 to 4,000 lb for unimproved ground.

Site requirements: floor, aisle and charging

These are indoor machines for smooth, level concrete. Small polyurethane wheels and a hand-pushed chassis do not tolerate broken slabs, expansion joints or gravel, and on any grade the operator is the brake — which is why ramps, yards and trailer approaches usually point toward the Vestil gas all-terrain units, starting with the ALL-T-2-GPT at 2,000 lb, rather than a walkie.

Aisle and doorway clearance decide more purchases than capacity does. The EKKO EA15A-138 lists a 59 in turning radius, 70 in overall length and 59 in maximum overall width, with the mast extending to 167 in; the EA15D turns in 52.6 in. Confirm the collapsed mast height clears your lowest door header before ordering a 138 in lift. Lowered fork height also matters for pallet entry: 2.6 in on the EA15A-138 and 2.35 in on the EA15D.

Plan the charging point before delivery. OSHA 1910.178(g) covers battery charging and changing facilities, including ventilation, fire protection and a designated area, and applies even to the small batteries these units carry.

Training, inspection and upkeep

OSHA 1910.178(l) requires employers to train, evaluate and certify operators of powered industrial trucks, and a stacker with a powered lift falls under that rule even though the operator supplies the push; the standard also calls for re-evaluation at least once every three years. OSHA 1910.178(q)(7) requires the truck be examined at least daily before it is placed in service. On the design side, ANSI/ITSDF B56.1 is the safety standard for low lift and high lift powered industrial trucks, and ANSI/ITSDF B56.10 addresses manually propelled high lift industrial trucks specifically.

Upkeep is modest: check hydraulic fluid level and hose condition, keep the mast channels and lift chain clean and lubricated, inspect load and steer wheels for flat spots or debris, and confirm the lowering valve holds. Battery type shapes the routine — sealed AGM packs, offered by Vestil as line items such as AGM-UPG-1-12V at $447.90 and AGM-UPG-SL, avoid the watering schedule that flooded lead-acid demands.
