Parts hoppers vs. a heavy duty forklift bucket

These two solve different problems. A hopper is a container: you load it at a bench or machine, move it, and release the contents. A bucket is a scoop. The Star Industries Heavy Duty Forklift Bucket, model 1400B, is 60" wide, holds 1.00 cubic yard and weighs 555 lbs empty. Volume, not weight, is the number to plan around, because a bucket rated by cubic yard will happily hold far more mass of one material than another. Weigh or calculate the specific material you handle rather than assuming a full bucket is always within your truck's capacity.

Fork fit, load center and rated capacity

Check fit before you check price. The Star bucket accepts forks up to 7" wide, 2 ½" thick and 48" long. The Forklift Lift Hook has fork pockets measuring 6¾" x 3" ID with 20" center-to-center at the open setting, overall dimensions of 29"W x 9¾"H x 24¼"L, and a net weight of 105 lbs. Measure your tine width and thickness with a tape before ordering; oversized tines will not enter the pockets, and undersized tines leave the attachment loose in the pocket, which is what wears pockets out.

Load center is the second check. Your truck's data plate states capacity at a specified load center, and an attachment that carries material ahead of the fork face shifts the center of gravity forward, reducing what the truck can safely lift. The attachment's own empty weight counts too — 555 lbs for the bucket, 105 lbs for the hook, and 490 to 936 lbs for the racks when you move those.

What OSHA and ANSI require when you add an attachment

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(a)(4) states that modifications and additions affecting capacity and safe operation shall not be performed without the truck manufacturer's prior written approval. OSHA 1910.178(a)(5) requires that trucks equipped with front-end attachments other than factory-installed ones be marked to identify the attachment and show the approximate weight of the truck and attachment combination at maximum elevation with the load laterally centered. In practice that means asking your truck's OEM for a revised capacity plate before an attachment goes into service.

OSHA 1910.178(l) requires operator training and evaluation for powered industrial trucks, including refresher training after unsafe operation or a change in workplace conditions — and a bucket or hook changes visibility, balance and handling enough to be worth covering directly. OSHA 1910.178(m) prohibits allowing anyone to stand or pass under the elevated portion of a truck, loaded or empty; buckets and hoppers are not personnel platforms. ANSI/ITSDF B56.1, the safety standard for low lift and high lift trucks, covers user and operator responsibilities in the same areas. When a load hangs from the lift hook you have moved into rigging, and ASME B30.9 covers slings and their inspection.

Storage, inspection and the true cost of cheap lift buckets

Attachments spend most of their life parked, and a bucket left on the floor gets clipped by traffic and fills with water. On cost: the gap between a cheap lift bucket and a heavy-duty one shows up at the fork pockets and the weld toes, where thin material elongates and cracks under repeated shock loading from scooping. OSHA 1910.178(q)(7) requires that industrial trucks be examined before being placed in service and at least daily, and the same discipline applied to attachments — checking pocket elongation, retaining hardware and cracks at welds — is what determines whether an attachment lasts one season or many.
