Dock boards and dock plates bridge the gap between your loading dock and a trailer or rail car so forklifts, pallet jacks and hand carts can cross safely. This collection carries 34 Vestil units priced from $105 to $7,812 — aluminum truck dockboards with welded aluminum curbs, steel dockboards, aluminum boards with steel safety curbs, fiberglass and aluminum dockplates, Edge-O-Dock and pit-mounted levelers, plus steel and aluminum yard ramps for sites without a dock. Decide first whether the crossing will be walked or driven by powered equipment; that single call drives capacity, deck material and whether you need safety curbs.

Both products do the same basic job — bridge the gap between a dock floor and a trailer bed so wheels can cross — but they are not interchangeable. Dock plates are lighter, flat aluminum, steel or fiberglass plates with no raised side curbs, intended for hand trucks, carts and foot traffic. Dock boards are heavier, carry welded safety curbs down both sides, and are built for powered equipment: counterbalanced forklifts, walkie stackers and electric pallet jacks. The curb is the deciding feature. Without it nothing stops a wheel from tracking off the edge mid-crossing. That is why the forklift-rated families in this collection — the BTA aluminum boards, the TS steel boards and the TAS aluminum boards with steel safety curbs — all have curbs, while the Aluminum Mini Dockplates, Aluminum Economizer Dockplates and the fiberglass FGDP do not. If a forklift will ever touch the crossing, buy a board, not a plate.
Start with the maximum intended load, not the pallet weight. OSHA 1910.26 requires that a dockboard be capable of supporting the maximum intended load placed on it, and at a dock that load is the lift truck's own service weight plus the payload plus the operator. A counterbalanced forklift usually weighs considerably more than what it is carrying, and its front axle carries most of that total, so buyers who spec against pallet weight alone end up badly under-rated. Many specifiers add margin on top of the static total because wheel loads spike as the truck crests the lip and again as it drops onto the trailer floor.
Length is driven by the height difference between dock floor and trailer bed. The bigger the mismatch, the longer the board has to be to keep the grade shallow enough for a loaded truck to climb without scraping its underside or stalling. Width should exceed your widest load plus working clearance on both sides — measure the load, not the forks. Our catalog gives you real reference points to work from: the steel TS-15-6030 is rated 15,000 lb on a 60"W × 30"L deck, the TS-10-6030 is 10,000 lb in that same 60" × 30" footprint, and the aluminum BTA-12007230 is rated 12,000 lb at 72 × 30.

Aluminum is the default for boards that get repositioned between bays. It is lighter for a given rating and does not rust, so it suits food, beverage, pharma and outdoor docks — but you pay more per pound of capacity. Steel is the value choice where a board lives in one bay and takes abuse from steel-wheeled equipment and dropped loads; the trade-off is weight and the need to keep paint intact so the deck does not corrode. Fiberglass is the specialty pick: non-conductive and non-sparking, which is why it shows up around battery charging areas, electrical work and corrosive washdown environments. The TAS family splits the difference on purpose — an aluminum deck to hold weight down, with steel curbs at the two edges that actually take forklift impact.
A portable board is the right answer when trailer heights vary, bays are used occasionally, or the board needs to move. When one bay runs all day, a fixed device is usually cheaper over its life because nobody has to reposition steel by hand. This collection covers the range: Edge-O-Dock levelers mount to the dock face and suit buildings with no pit; Mechanical Dock Levelers (RR) use a pull-chain and spring mechanism; Electric Hydraulic Dock Levelers (EH) run off push-button control for high-cycle operations; Truck Actuated Dock Levelers are set by the trailer itself. Add-A-Levels address grade problems inside the trailer. For conditioned buildings, the Dock Leveler Insulation Blanket (DIB) and pit-mount Weather Stripping (WS) reduce air loss at the pit, and the LED and heavy-duty LED dock loading lights handle visibility inside the trailer.
If your site has no dock at all, the aluminum and steel yard ramps let a forklift drive from grade into a trailer. The Mini Yard Ramp YRM-05-7514 is rated 5,000 lb at 75" × 14". Ramp options in this collection include pneumatic tires, DC hydraulic or manual lift, tow bar hitches, 6" curb height, yellow safety curbs and lip lag holes — spec the tires and lift style around how often the ramp will be towed and by what.
OSHA 1910.26 covers dockboards directly: portable units must be secured in place or otherwise prevented from moving out of position, and they must have run-off protection at the sides unless run-off is not a hazard. ANSI MH30.2 addresses the safety, performance and testing of portable dock leveling devices. Separately, OSHA 1910.178(m)(7) requires that the brakes of highway trucks be set and wheel chocks placed under the rear wheels while a truck is being loaded or unloaded, and OSHA 1910.178(l) requires training and evaluation for anyone operating a powered industrial truck. Trailer creep and premature pull-away remain two of the most common causes of dock incidents, so chocks or a restraint system belong in the buying conversation alongside the board itself.
Portable boards need a simple recurring inspection: check curb welds and lip condition, look for cracks or permanent deformation in the deck, confirm the lip seats fully on the trailer floor, and keep the rated capacity legible so nobody guesses. Handholds and lift points exist so the board can be repositioned safely — do not move a heavy board with forks under one corner. The three mistakes we see most often are sizing capacity against pallet weight instead of the loaded lift truck, buying a plate for forklift traffic because it costs less, and buying a board that is too short for the actual dock-to-trailer height difference, which turns every crossing into a grade problem. Verify the trailer heights you actually receive, including air-ride trailers that settle under load, before you commit to a deck length.
