Bluff

Bluff builds material handling safety equipment for warehouses, docks and manufacturing floors. Vovlift is an authorized Bluff dealer, and the Bluff line we currently stock is the SG4048 Forklift Safety Cage — a rated work platform that mounts to a lift truck's forks so a worker can reach elevated racking, lighting, sprinkler heads or overhead service points without a ladder or scissor lift. It carries a 1,000 lb. rated capacity and lists at $2,246. Below the grid you will find how the cage is specified, the sites it suits, and what OSHA requires when a forklift elevates people.

What Bluff Makes, and What Vovlift Stocks

Bluff is a manufacturer of steel material handling and safety products for loading dock and warehouse work. Our catalog does not carry the whole Bluff range — the honest description of this page is that we stock one active Bluff SKU, and it sits in the fork-mounted work platform family: the SG4048 Forklift Safety Cage, rated at 1,000 lb. and priced at $2,246. If you are comparing Bluff against another brand, compare on that product, not on a catalog we do not hold. If you need a different Bluff item, we can source against the manufacturer's current line as an authorized dealer rather than substituting a look-alike.

The SG4048 Forklift Safety Cage

A forklift safety cage is a self-contained, guarded platform that slides onto the forks of a lift truck you already own. It is not a machine — there is no drive, no hydraulics and no power source in the cage itself. The lift truck supplies all the lifting; the cage supplies the standing surface, the guarding and the fork pockets that keep it located on the carriage.

The 1,000 lb. rating is the total the platform is rated to carry: occupants plus tools, parts and anything set down on the deck. Budget it as a combined figure, not as a per-person figure, and confirm the cage's interior working area and occupant rating against the manufacturer's data before you put more than one person in it.

Who This Suits, and Who It Does Not

The buyer this fits already owns a lift truck and needs occasional elevated access — pulling stock from a top rack beam, changing a high bay fixture, servicing a conveyor drive, doing a quarterly inspection above the floor. For that duty profile a cage is the cheap answer: at $2,246 it costs a fraction of a boom or scissor lift, it stores flat against a wall, and it has no batteries, engine or annual machine maintenance of its own.

It is the wrong answer for sustained aerial work. If crews are elevated for hours at a time, moving horizontally while raised, or working outside on uneven ground, a self-propelled aerial work platform is the right tool and a fork-mounted cage is not a substitute for it. A cage also does not extend your lift truck's reach: your maximum working height is your truck's lift height, and your capacity ceiling is set by your truck's data plate at that height, not by the cage's 1,000 lb. rating.

Site constraints to check before ordering: aisle width and overhead clearance at the intended work point, floor condition where the truck will be parked while elevated, and whether your carriage and fork spacing suit the cage's fork pockets. Measure the forks you actually run, not the forks the truck shipped with.

Rules That Govern Elevating People on a Forklift

Using a lift truck to raise personnel is regulated, and the regulation is worth reading before the cage arrives. OSHA addresses powered industrial trucks in 29 CFR 1910.178, which includes requirements for elevating personnel on a truck — among them a platform secured to the lifting carriage or forks, protection against falling objects where conditions warrant, and an operator who stays at the controls while anyone is elevated. OSHA also expects the truck to remain stationary, braked and with its mast in a safe position while personnel are raised.

The consensus design standard is ANSI/ITSDF B56.1, published by the Industrial Truck Standards Development Foundation, which covers low lift and high lift trucks and sets conditions for personnel platforms — including a required relationship between the truck's rated capacity and the combined weight of the platform, occupants and load. Check that relationship against your specific truck's capacity plate; do not assume any lift truck in the fleet qualifies. Neither OSHA nor ANSI treats the purchase of a cage as sufficient on its own — operator training and a documented pre-use inspection are part of the requirement.

Buying, Parts and Freight

Vovlift sells the SG4048 as an authorized Bluff dealer, so the unit ships as a current-production, factory-warranted item and warranty claims go through the normal manufacturer channel rather than a gray-market path. That matters more on a safety-rated product than on a consumable: a platform that carries people should be traceable to the manufacturer, with the capacity plate and labeling intact.

Because this is a fabricated steel item rather than a parcel-sized product, it moves by LTL freight. Freight is quoted to your destination and dock situation at order time — tell us whether you have a dock or need a liftgate and we will price it accordingly, and we will confirm the exact assembly and packaging condition with the manufacturer before your order is placed rather than guessing at it here. For replacement components, decals or capacity plates, order through us and we will pull the correct part against your serial number.
