Detergents and chemicals for pressure washers

This category covers the consumables that do the actual cleaning work — the pressure washer itself only supplies water, pressure and flow. Vovlift carries eight detergent and chemical items from BE Power Equipment, ranging from $15 to $84. The concentrates come in 1-gallon (3.8 L) jugs sold in 4-packs: heavy duty degreaser, deck and fence detergent, house and siding detergent, and car wash detergent. High foam auto wash is also stocked in 1-liter bottles by the 12-pack. Rounding out the line are a pump saver in 16 oz / 473 ml bottles (12 pack), a standalone foam cannon attachment, and a foam cannon bundled with auto wash detergent.

Matching detergent chemistry to the surface

The most common buying mistake in this category is treating detergent as interchangeable. It is not — chemistry is chosen by soil type and by what the surface can tolerate.

• Heavy duty degreaser is a high-alkaline formula built for oil, grease and shop grime. Alkaline chemistry is what cuts petroleum soils, and it is the wrong choice for automotive clear coat.
• Car wash detergent and high foam auto wash are the vehicle products. The 1 L auto wash is neutral pH and paint-safe, which is what you want on clear coats, chrome, plastic trim and glass, and it is recommended for automotive, truck, RV and marine work.
• Deck and fence detergent is compatible with natural wood, pressure-treated lumber and composite materials.
• House and siding detergent is rated for vinyl, aluminum, painted wood, stucco, concrete, brick, masonry, asphalt shingles, glass, gutters, soffits, eaves and garage doors.

Two habits separate clean results from streaks and damage: work bottom to top on vertical surfaces so runs do not etch into unrinsed panels, and never let detergent dry on the surface. On a hot, sunny day, wash in shade or in smaller sections.

Dilution, soap injectors and foam cannons

Every concentrate here is diluted before use, and the correct ratio depends on both the product and the delivery method.

At 1:20, a single gallon of degreaser or deck and fence detergent yields up to 20 gallons of usable solution. That is the figure to cost a job against, not the shelf price of the jug.

Downstream soap injectors draw chemical only at low pressure, so the sequence is: apply with a soap nozzle, let the product dwell, then switch to a high-pressure tip to rinse. Foam cannons work differently, mixing air, water and concentrate into a thick foam blanket that clings while it works. The high foam auto wash is formulated for a 2–5 minute dwell, long enough to soften road film before a mitt touches the paint.

Foam cannon compatibility and specs

Foam quality depends as much on the machine as on the soap. The Foam Cannon with Auto Wash is built for up to 4,000 PSI and up to 6.5 GPM, with a maximum water temperature of 60 °C (140 °F). It uses a ¼″ quick-connect male inlet with brass fittings, carries a 1 L soap tank, and offers adjustable flow control plus a nozzle that switches between fan and narrow patterns. Paired with the car wash detergent, the listed maximum spray range is 20 feet with compatible foam cannons.

Before ordering, confirm three things about your washer: that its outlet accepts a ¼″ quick-connect coupler, that its pressure and flow fall inside the cannon's rating, and — if you run a hot-water machine — that outlet temperature stays at or below the 60 °C (140 °F) limit. Lower-flow electric washers will still foam, but the blanket will be thinner and the mix needs to be richer.

Handling, storage and washwater

Concentrated detergents are workplace chemicals. OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1200, requires employers to keep safety data sheets accessible for hazardous chemicals in the workplace and to label containers — so if you decant concentrate into a spray bottle or day tank, label it. OSHA's personal protective equipment rule, 29 CFR 1910.132, requires employers to assess hazards and provide suitable protection; splash-rated eye protection and chemical-resistant gloves are the normal choice when handling high-alkaline degreaser.

Discharge matters too. Under the Clean Water Act, EPA stormwater rules generally treat detergent-bearing wash water as a non-stormwater discharge that does not belong in a storm drain, and many municipalities require it be captured or routed to sanitary sewer. Check with your local sewer authority before committing to a wash pad location. Store concentrates sealed in their original containers in a cool, dry place, and keep them from freezing.

Pump saver and off-season protection

Pump saver is the cheapest insurance in this category. It is an anti-freeze and lubricant charge pushed through the pump after the last job or before storage, displacing water from the seals and check valves. Water left standing in a pump can freeze and crack the head, and dry seals harden and leak.
