How to Choose an Electric Forklift

Start with the load, not the truck. Every forklift is rated at a specific load center, and the rating on the data plate only applies at that distance. The EOSLift CPD models in this collection rate capacity at a 19 in. load center; the CPDS models use 19.68 in. If the center of gravity of your pallet sits farther forward than that, usable capacity falls below the plate figure. ANSI/ITSDF B56.1 covers data plate information and stability requirements for high-lift powered industrial trucks, and it is the reason you never spec a truck on rated capacity alone.

Next comes lift height. The full electric forklift models here run from 118 in. through 138 in., 177 in., 185 in. and 189 in. of lift. Measure your top beam height, add the load and pallet, then confirm the collapsed mast height clears your lowest door, trailer or sprinkler line. A 189 in. mast solves a racking problem and creates a doorway problem if nobody checks.

Counterbalance, Three-Wheel and Stand-Up Electric Forklift Trucks

Three configurations are represented in this collection, and they solve different site problems.

• Four-wheel seated counterbalance — the default for mixed indoor and dock work. Models include the EKKO EK25G-LI (5,000 lb, 189 in. lift), EK30GT-Li (6,000 lb, 185 in. lift) and the EOSLift CPD15, CPD20 and CPD25. Four wheels spread the load and give the most stable platform when you are working ramps, dock plates and uneven yard surfaces.
• Three-wheel — a tighter turning radius for narrow aisles. The GNT G35ALi is a three-wheel lithium truck with an AC drive and side-shift forks; the EOSLift CPDS15 is a three-wheel counterbalance rated 3,306.93 lb, and the EKKO EK16A-177 is a 3,500 lb three-wheel with 177 in. lift. The trade-off is stability on rough or sloped ground, where the four-wheel trucks are the safer pick.
• Stand-up rider — the EKKO EK18RFL (4,000 lb, 189 in. lift). Stand-up trucks suit high-cycle work where the operator gets on and off constantly, and they take less aisle to turn than a comparable sit-down.

Lithium Power, Charging and Duty Cycle

The lithium models in this collection — the EKKO Li series, the GNT G35ALi and GF-Li — use lithium battery packs with AC drive systems. The practical difference from lead-acid is opportunity charging: a lithium pack can be topped up during breaks instead of being pulled and swapped, which matters if you run more than one shift. The GNT G35ALi charges from a 110V single-phase system, so confirm what circuit each truck you are considering actually needs before it arrives on your dock.

Charging infrastructure is part of the purchase, not an afterthought. OSHA 1910.178(g) sets requirements for battery charging installations, including designated charging areas, provisions for handling and flushing spilled electrolyte, fire protection and adequate ventilation. Decide where the charger lives, what it plugs into and who is responsible for the area before the equipment is delivered.

Capacity and Lift Height Across the Range

Tires, Floor Loading and Site Constraints

Tire type decides where the truck can work. The EOSLift CPD series runs pneumatic tires, which tolerate broken concrete, gravel transitions and yard work. The CPDS10 and CPDS15 use PU tires and the CPDS16 and CPDS20 use solid rubber — both are indoor, smooth-floor choices that give up ground clearance and cushioning in exchange for a smaller footprint and lower rolling resistance.

Also check what the truck weighs, not just what it lifts. The EOSLift CPD25 is rated 5,500 lb but has a service weight of 7,936 lb including battery, and the CPD20 is 7,451 lb against a 4,400 lb rating. Add the load and you are putting well over six tons on a mezzanine, a dock plate or an elevator floor. Get the rated capacity of those structures confirmed before the truck shows up.

Training, Inspection and Compliance

Buying the truck is the easy part. OSHA 1910.178(l) requires that operators of powered industrial trucks be trained, evaluated and certified before operating one, with an evaluation of each operator's performance at least once every three years. OSHA 1910.178(q)(7) requires that trucks be examined at least daily before being placed in service, or after each shift where trucks are used around the clock. Build that inspection into the shift routine rather than treating it as paperwork.

If you are planning to add a clamp, rotator or extended forks, note that OSHA 1910.178(a)(4) does not permit modifications or additions that affect capacity or safe operation without the manufacturer's prior written approval — and capacity plates have to be changed to match. Sort attachments out with the manufacturer at the point of purchase, not after the truck is in service.
