What a Walkie Reach Truck Is Built For

A walkie reach truck is a pedestrian-controlled electric truck with a reach mechanism that moves the forks — or the entire mast — forward of the wheelbase, so a pallet can be set into or pulled out of a rack bay from the aisle. The operator walks behind or beside the unit rather than riding it, which keeps the chassis short and the aisle requirement tight. The practical contrast is with a straddle stacker, whose outrigger legs have to pass under or around the pallet. Where you have beam-level racking and no clearance under the bottom beam, the legs will not fit and a reach mechanism is the answer. That is the reason most buyers land in this category: they are storing on racking, not just floor-stacking, and they need to service the first-position pallet without a counterbalanced truck and the aisle width it demands. Moving Mast, Reach Carriage and Stand-Up Narrow Aisle Reach Trucks

Three configurations sit in this collection, and they are not interchangeable.

• Moving mast walkie reach trucks — the mast assembly itself travels forward on rails in the chassis. Fewer moving parts in the carriage, a rigid load path, and simpler service. The EKKO EH15T, EKKO EH15TH and GNT G33RH-Li are built this way.
• Reach carriage walkie trucks — the mast stays put and a pantograph or sliding carriage pushes the forks out. This keeps the truck's center of gravity more stable during the reach stroke and is common where operators are cycling constantly. The EKKO ER15 series and the GNT G33R-LI Series fall here, and several add side shift and tilt for fine alignment without repositioning the whole truck.
• Stand-up and stand-on reach trucks — the operator rides the unit. Travel distances get long in most warehouses, and walking beside a truck all shift is the hidden cost buyers underestimate. The EKKO EK18RR, EKKO EK18RRL, GNT GSR40-Li and both EOSLift LR20 configurations are ride-on units.

The rough rule: if travel between pick and put-away is short and duty is intermittent, a walkie is cheaper to buy and cheaper to insure. If the truck is moving most of the shift, a stand-up model pays for itself in operator throughput.

Capacity, Lift Height and Load Center in Our Range

Rated capacity on any reach truck is stated at a specific load center, and it de-rates as you go up the mast. Always read the capacity plate on the actual unit, not the headline number. Here is what our product data confirms:

Load center matters as much as capacity. The EKKO EK18RR and EH15T are both rated at a 24" load center; the EOSLift LR20 is rated at 19.685". A deep or unevenly packed pallet shifts the effective load center outward and eats into rated capacity, which is the single most common miscalculation buyers make when they size a truck off a spreadsheet.

Power, Charging and Battery Handling

Lithium has taken over the upper half of this category. The GNT GSR40-Li lists 1.5-hour fast charging and zero battery maintenance, which is what makes opportunity charging during breaks realistic instead of swapping packs. The GNT G33R-LI Series runs a 24V AC drive motor and a 24V lift motor with a Curtis controller and electronic power steering. AC drive systems, used across the GNT units here, eliminate brushes and the associated wear service.

If you go lead-acid instead, budget for the charging room, not just the charger. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(g) sets requirements for battery charging installations, including facilities for flushing and neutralizing spilled electrolyte, fire protection, and ventilation to disperse gases. That is a real facility cost and it belongs in the comparison.

Aisle Width, Floors and Site Requirements

Measure before you buy. The EKKO EH15T is 41" wide overall with a 67" turning radius; the EKKO EK18RR is 54.72" wide with an overall extended length of 102.28". Those numbers, plus your pallet footprint, determine the working aisle — and if you are handling GMA-standard 48 x 40 inch pallets, the pallet orientation in the bay changes the answer.

Check overhead clearance against lowered mast height, not lifted height: the EH15T sits at 93.3" lowered and the EK18RR at 96.42". Doorways, mezzanine underclearances and trailer openings are where a tall-mast truck gets stranded. Floor condition is the other constraint — these are polyurethane-wheeled indoor trucks, and joints, slopes and dock plates that a pneumatic-tire forklift shrugs off will affect handling at height.

Training, Inspection and Cost of Ownership

Reach trucks are powered industrial trucks. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(l) requires employers to train, evaluate and certify each operator before they operate one independently, with re-evaluation at least once every three years. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(q)(7) also requires trucks to be examined before being placed in service, at least daily or after each shift where trucks run around the clock. ANSI/ITSDF B56.1 is the consensus safety standard covering low lift and high lift powered industrial trucks, and it is the document your dealer and insurer will reference.
