Box Culvert Wings

Box culvert wings turn a mechanical pipe hook into a balanced lifter for precast concrete box sections. Vovlift stocks five Kenco box culvert wing sets — PH3500SL, PH9000, PH12000, PH18000 and PH30000 — priced from $895 to $1,150. Each set mounts to the matching pipe hook body through a keyway system and spreads contact across the section so it stabilizes and balances as it comes off the ground. Where specs are listed, the wings are high-strength structural steel with an industrial corrosion-resistant coating for outdoor service on drainage, utility and civil infrastructure work. Match the wing model to the hook model you run.

What Box Culvert Wings Do

Box culvert wings are a below-the-hook attachment that converts a mechanical pipe hook from a round-pipe lifter into a lifter for square and rectangular precast sections. A pipe hook seats against the inside wall of a round pipe and self-centers as the load comes up. A box section has flat walls and square corners, so the hook body alone has nothing to seat against and the load can swing or cock. The wings mount to the hook body through a keyway system and spread contact across the box section, stabilizing and balancing it through the lift. All five sets in this collection are Kenco attachments listed for precast concrete box culvert work on civil infrastructure, drainage and utility projects. They are accessories to a hook, not standalone lifters — you need the matching pipe hook to use them.

Culvert Wings vs. a Culvert Wingwall: Two Different Things

Search traffic for culvert wings, culvert wingwall and box culvert wing wall mixes two unrelated subjects, and it is worth separating them before you spend money. A culvert wingwall is permanent construction: a retaining wall that flares out from the barrel at the inlet or outlet to hold back the embankment, guide flow into the opening and limit scour. FHWA's Hydraulic Design of Highway Culverts (HDS-5) treats wingwall flare angle as an inlet-configuration variable that affects culvert capacity, which is why state DOT standard drawings specify it. Box culvert wings, the products on this page, are jobsite rigging hardware used to set the precast section. If you came here for wingwall design guidance, these parts will not help. If you need to place box culvert sections, they will.

Kenco Box Culvert Wings in This Collection

Five Kenco wing sets are active, from $895 to $1,150. Each is matched to a specific pipe hook, so the model number on the wings has to line up with the hook you already own or are buying alongside it.

Our published spec data for the PH30000 set is incomplete. Contact us to confirm hook compatibility and maximum culvert width before you order that model rather than assuming it follows the pattern of the smaller sets.

How to Choose the Right Set

Work through four checks in this order.

  • Match the hook, not the job. These are keyway-mounted accessories built for a specific hook body. Buy the wing set whose model matches your pipe hook, and do not assume a set will adapt to another manufacturer's hook.
  • Check the section width. Our specs list a maximum supported width of roughly 6 ft (1.8 m) for the PH3500SL, PH9000, PH12000 and PH18000 sets. Measure the widest section on the plan sheet, not the average one.
  • Confirm the rated load on the hardware. Do not read the model number as a capacity. ASME B30.20 requires below-the-hook lifting devices to be marked with their rated load, and ASME BTH-1 covers their structural design. Read the marking on the hook and the wing set, and size the pick to the lower of the two.
  • Consider duty cycle. A precast yard setting sections daily wears keyways and contact faces faster than a contractor placing a handful of culverts a season. Higher-frequency users should budget for a spare set and more frequent inspection.

Rigging and Site Considerations

Precast box sections are stiff, heavy and awkward to control by hand, so the lift plan matters as much as the attachment. Sections themselves are typically specified to ASTM C1433, which covers precast reinforced concrete monolithic box sections for culverts, storm drains and sewers — check that the sections delivered match the plan callout before you rig them. Give the crane operator a clear approach and firm, level bearing under the outriggers or tracks; trench edges and freshly placed bedding do not count as firm ground. Use tag lines to steer the section instead of hands on the concrete. OSHA 1926.1425 addresses keeping employees clear of the load during crane operations, and that rule is the reason joint alignment is done with bars and come-alongs after the section is set down, not while it hangs. Wet weather, mud on the contact faces and ice all reduce friction between the wings and the concrete, so clean the contact surfaces before each pick.

Inspection, Maintenance and What Buyers Get Wrong

OSHA 1926.251 requires rigging equipment for material handling to be inspected prior to use on each shift and removed from service when damaged. ASME B30.20 covers inspection intervals and marking for below-the-hook lifting devices. On a wing set, that means looking at the keyway engagement for wear or deformation, checking welds and contact faces for cracks, and confirming the rated-load marking is still legible. Touch up the coating where it has been chipped by concrete contact, and store the set off the ground rather than in a muddy laydown yard.

Three mistakes come up repeatedly. First, treating the model number as a load rating — it is a model designation, and the rating is what is marked on the equipment. Second, buying wings without the matching hook, then discovering the keyway does not mate. Third, stretching a set past its listed maximum culvert width because the section is only slightly over; that is the point at which you need a different lifting method, not a bigger effort on the same one.
