Barrier Lifts and Concrete Barrier Lifters: What They Do

A barrier lift is a below-the-hook clamp that grips a precast concrete barrier by its side walls so an excavator, telehandler, crane or knuckleboom can pick it, carry it and set it without anyone touching the load. On highway and infrastructure work that pays off twice: it keeps the ground crew out from under a suspended piece, and it lets one operator place barrier faster than a crew that has to rig and de-rig chains on every unit. The mechanical clamps in this collection are listed with automatic engagement and a manual quick release, so the working cycle is set down, lift, place, release.

Every unit on this page is built by Kenco, and prices run from $550 to $10,950 — the low end being lifting plates and the small monument and curb lift, the high end being the larger barrier lifters. Several models, including the KL12000, the KL9000V4 and the Florida KL9K12T18V4, are specified as hydraulic-free mechanical clamps. That matters if your carrier has no spare auxiliary circuit: there is nothing to plumb, no hoses to chafe or burst in a live work zone, and no thumb or grapple circuit to give up.

Barrier Clamps, Lifting Plates and Curb Lifts

The collection covers five distinct things, and buyers regularly order the wrong one.

• Full-profile barrier clamps — the KL9000, KL12000, KL16000, KL16KNG8T18, KL30000 and KL40000 lifters, sized by model for progressively heavier barrier work.
• Low-profile clamps — the Texas KL12000TLP and the Florida KL9K12T18V4, built around the shorter barrier sections used on those state standard shapes.
• Double lifters — the Kenco Double Barrier Lifter (KLDL14K8T9) uses dual lifting arms to handle two barrier panels in a single pick, which changes the cycle-time economics on long runs.
• Monument and curb lift — the TSL15C4T16 is a scissor-style clamp rated at 1,500 lb with an adjustable 4 in to 16 in grip range, for precast curb and monument work rather than barrier.
• Lifting plates — listed by model (KL9000V4, KL12000, KL12000TLP, KL16000, KL30000). Order these against the model number on your existing unit, not against your barrier.

Choosing Capacity and Grip Range

Two checks decide the model, and they are independent of each other.

Weight. Rated capacity has to exceed the actual weight of the piece being lifted, not a nominal figure. Precast barrier weight varies with shape, section length and reinforcement, so take it from the precaster's shop drawing or your state DOT standard drawing rather than estimating. We publish lift ratings, not barrier weights. The rated capacities published for this collection run from 1,500 lb on the TSL15C4T16 up to 12,000 lb on the KL12000 and KL12000TLP; capacity for the remaining models is shown on the individual product pages.

Grip range. A clamp only works inside its published range, measured where it actually contacts the barrier. The Florida KL9K12T18V4 grips 12 in to 18 in; the TSL15C4T16 adjusts from 4 in to 16 in. Measure your section at the grip location, not at the base flare. A clamp sized for a wide section will not close securely on a slim one, and a narrow-range clamp will not seat on a full-height piece.

Carrier, Rigging and Work Zone Requirements

Selecting the lift is only half the job — the carrier has to hold the load at the radius you actually work at. Add the weight of the lift itself to the barrier weight, then check that total against your machine's load chart at maximum reach rather than at its best case. Attachment is through the lift's mounting points to your hook, shackle or quick coupler.

ASME B30.20 covers below-the-hook lifting devices, including marking, construction and inspection provisions, and the companion design standard ASME BTH-1 addresses design categories and service classes for those devices. OSHA 1926.1425 restricts personnel from working under suspended loads, which is the core argument for a clamp over hand rigging. OSHA's crane and derrick requirements for construction sit in 29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC and apply when barrier is placed with a crane. For the placement work itself, the FHWA Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices governs temporary traffic control and positive protection in work zones.

Inspection and Maintenance

OSHA 1926.251 requires rigging equipment for material handling to be inspected before use on each shift and as necessary during use, with damaged equipment removed from service. On a barrier clamp the wear items are the contact surfaces, the pivot pins and bushings, and the release mechanism. The Florida KL9K12T18V4 uses elastomer grip pads, which are consumables — glazed, torn or oil-soaked pads lose friction exactly when it matters. Keep the rated load marking legible; ASME B30.20 requires below-the-hook devices to be marked with their rated load, and an unmarked device fails inspection on most jobs. Bent arms, elongated pin holes and cracked welds are cause to pull the unit from service, not to field-repair it.
