Trash Hoppers for Forklifts, Telehandlers and Cranes

A trash hopper is a steel container designed to be carried and emptied by a lift truck instead of wheeled by hand. On a jobsite it sits at the work face collecting demolition debris, offcuts and packaging, then travels to the roll-off container in one machine cycle. In a plant it handles scrap, dunnage and floor sweepings between shifts. The buying case is usually labor: you are replacing repeated cart trips with a single lift, so the attachment pays back in handling hours rather than in anything on the spec sheet. The 15 models here come from Apex Hoppers and Star Industries and span 1/4 to 5 cubic yards at 4,000 to 8,000 lbs.

Fork-Mounted, Crane-Suspended and Concrete Hoppers

The three styles in this category are not interchangeable, and the mount decides which machines can run the attachment.

• Fork-mounted trash hoppers. The Apex Hoppers heavy duty line and the Star Industries Heavy Duty Forklift Trash Hopper slip over the forks and are secured to the truck. The Star unit (models 1425 and 1430) is rated at 5,000 lbs and uses slip-on fork pockets with full-length fork channels, an open-face front for loading by hand, reinforced edges, and a safety chain with a locking grab hook. Apex publishes a 2 3/4" fork clearance on the HD25, HD200 and HD350, so measure your fork thickness before ordering.
• Crane dumping buckets. The Apex Hoppers Crane Dumping Bucket is rated at 8,000 lbs and is offered as CB75 (3/4 cu yd), CB100 (1 cu yd), CB150 (1 1/2 cu yd) and CB200 (2 cu yd). These hang from a hook rather than riding on forks, which suits steel erection, roofing tear-off and any pick where the debris is above grade.
• Concrete hoppers. The Star Industries Forklift Concrete Hopper (model 1575) is a different tool: 3/4 cu yd, 770 lbs empty, with a 30-inch chute that swings 40 degrees total (20 degrees each side) and a manual gate with an adjustable multi-position handle. Its universal slip-on fork design lets a rough terrain forklift place wet concrete at a footing or form.

Sizing a Trash Hopper: Volume and Load Capacity Are Separate Limits

Every hopper has two ceilings, and the denser your waste stream, the sooner the weight ceiling arrives. Light, bulky material — insulation, drywall offcuts, cardboard, plastic film — fills the box long before the rating is reached, so buy volume. Dense material — masonry rubble, wet concrete, metal turnings, saturated soil — reaches the load rating with the hopper barely covered, so buy the rating and accept the smaller cube. The Apex line shows the effect: the 1/4 cubic yard HD25 carries 4,000 lbs and weighs 325 lbs empty, while the 3 1/2 cubic yard HD350 carries 8,000 lbs and weighs 1,470 lbs empty. That empty weight is not a footnote — it comes off your truck's usable capacity before a single shovel of debris goes in.

Truck Capacity, Clearance and Fit

An attachment changes what the lift truck can safely carry. OSHA 1910.178(a)(4) states that modifications and additions affecting capacity and safe operation shall not be made without the manufacturer's prior written approval, and that capacity, operation and maintenance instruction plates be changed accordingly; ANSI/ITSDF B56.1 likewise addresses rated capacity when attachments are fitted. In practice, subtract the hopper's empty weight from your truck's rated capacity and account for the load center moving forward — a hopper 75 3/4" long, like the HD200, puts its center of gravity well ahead of the load center your data plate is rated at. Confirm the derated figure with your truck's data plate or dealer.

The three Apex models with published construction data are built from 7GA and 1/4" steel, 100% MIG welded, and made in the USA. The Star Industries fork hopper uses heavy-duty 3/16-inch steel.

Standards, Training and Rigging

OSHA 1910.178(l) requires operators of powered industrial trucks to be trained and evaluated, with re-evaluation at least once every three years, and the training must address the truck type and the workplace conditions in use — an attachment that changes forward visibility and load center is exactly the kind of change that warrants refresher instruction. OSHA 1910.178(q)(7) requires the truck to be examined at least daily before being placed in service, which is a natural point to check the hopper's fork pockets, safety chain and pivot points as well. For crane-suspended work, ASME B30.20 sets design and marking criteria for below-the-hook lifting devices — ask the manufacturer whether a given bucket is furnished as one — and ASME B30.9 covers the slings used to rig it. Keep everyone clear of a suspended or raised hopper.

Maintenance and What Buyers Get Wrong

Hoppers are simple, which is why they get ignored until something fails. Keep the dump mechanism and latch clean and lubricated; fine debris and concrete slurry are what seize a pivot. Inspect the welds at the fork pockets and lifting points, since those carry the load path, and look for cracking rather than surface rust. Wash out a concrete hopper before the load sets, because hardened residue permanently steals volume and adds tare weight. The three mistakes we see most: buying by cubic yard alone when the waste stream is dense, forgetting that empty weight comes out of the truck's capacity, and ordering a fork-pocket hopper without measuring fork thickness against the published clearance. Replacing worn rigging points — Star Industries sells lifting hooks for self-dump hoppers — is cheaper than retiring a sound hopper.
