What Material Lifts Do and Where They Fit

A material lift raises product, tooling or an operator on a fixed vertical mast. Travel is straight up — no boom reach, no turret rotation — and that single constraint is what lets these machines work in aisles, stockrooms and maintenance bays where a scissor lift or a forklift will not fit. The footprint stays small, the machine stays light, and setup takes seconds. The DRVS variants of the Power Stocker carry a safety sensor that the standard PS-12DRV and PS-15DRV do not. If your stockroom has blind corners, foot traffic or an aisle shared with pickers on foot, specify that version.

How to Size a Material Lift for Your Site

Start at the ceiling, not at the machine. Measure from the finished floor to the highest point an operator has to reach or place stock, then compare that against the platform height or lift height the manufacturer publishes for each model. Working-height conventions differ between makers, and an operator's reach allowance is a convention rather than a published spec, so compare like with like before you shortlist.

Then check three site dimensions you already own: overhead and doorway clearance along the travel route, aisle width at the tightest point, and the floor itself. Closed height is the one buyers forget. The PS-10 is listed at 6 ft 4 in closed, the PS-15S at 7 ft 6 in, the PS-12 at 7 ft 10 in, and the fully powered merchandise lift at 62 in. If the machine has to pass under a roll-up door, through a stockroom doorway or into a trailer, that number decides the purchase.

Capacity is the third filter. Rated platform capacity is the total of operator, tools and material together, so subtract the operator and their gear before deciding whether 650 lb, 500 lb or 300 lb covers the work. Mezzanines and upper floors add a fourth question: confirm the machine's gross weight against the floor's rated load with the building owner or a structural engineer before it rolls on.

Power, Charging and Duty Cycle

Every powered machine on this page is battery or DC electric. That matters indoors — no exhaust, no fuel storage, low noise — and it turns uptime into a charging question. Give each unit a fixed parking and charging position on a dedicated circuit, and charge on a routine rather than running packs flat, which is what shortens their service life. OSHA 1910.178(g) sets out charging-installation requirements for powered industrial trucks, covering ventilation, facilities for handling spilled electrolyte and protection from open flame; even where a lift is not itself a powered industrial truck, those provisions are a sound template for laying out a charging area.

Duty cycle drives the push-around versus drivable decision more than height does. A push-around personnel lift is repositioned by hand, which is efficient when an operator makes a handful of moves per shift and keeps acquisition cost down. A drivable Power Stocker earns its premium when the operator repositions constantly, as in retail replenishment or order staging, where walking the machine back and forth is the real cost. MRO lifts sit at the other extreme: used infrequently, but at heights the push-around units do not reach.

Safety Standards and Operator Training for Material Lifts

Vertical mast and personnel lifts of this type are mobile elevating work platforms, and the ANSI/SAIA A92 family governs them: A92.20 covers design and manufacture, A92.22 covers safe use, and A92.24 covers training. ANSI/SAIA A92.22 places the obligation on the user rather than the dealer — a written safe-use program, a documented site risk assessment, model-specific familiarization for each operator, and a rescue plan for a stranded platform. ANSI/SAIA A92.24 defines what operator and supervisor training has to include.

Two related points. Order pickers and other powered industrial trucks are a different class of machine under OSHA 1910.178 and ANSI/ITSDF B56.1, with their own training and evaluation requirements, so do not assume a forklift certification covers a mast lift. And the expandable roller conveyor in this collection falls under ASME B20.1, the safety standard for conveyors, which addresses guarding and access at transfer points. OSHA 1910.176 covers the space around all of it, including aisles, clearance and housekeeping in material handling and storage areas.

What Buyers Get Wrong When Choosing a Material Lift

Four mistakes recur. Buying on lift height alone, then discovering the closed height will not clear a doorway. Buying push-around to save money on a job that turns out to be a continuous pick, then paying for it in labor every shift. Treating rated capacity as material-only and forgetting the operator counts against it. And skipping the floor survey, which is what turns a capable machine into one that binds, drifts or will not elevate on an out-of-level surface.

A fifth is quieter: not deciding who owns the machine. Lifts with no assigned home and no charging routine end up with flat batteries and lapsed inspections. Before you buy, settle where it parks, who charges it, who performs the pre-use inspection the operator manual calls for, and who keeps the training records ANSI/SAIA A92.24 expects. That is usually the difference between a lift that lasts and one that becomes an obstacle in the aisle.
