A hopper machine takes the manual labor out of moving scrap, rubble, sweepings and concrete around a plant or jobsite. Vovlift stocks 15 industrial hoppers from Apex Hoppers and Star Industries, ranging from a 1/4 cubic yard unit rated 4,000 lbs up to a 5 cubic yard hopper rated 8,000 lbs, plus crane dumping buckets, a forklift concrete hopper with a swivel chute, a heavy-duty forklift trash hopper and replacement lifting hooks for self-dump hoppers. Prices run from $591 to $4,938. Below the grid you'll find sizing guidance, forklift fit notes and answers to the questions buyers ask most about material handling hoppers.

A hopper machine is a steel container built to be carried, positioned and emptied by a machine you already own. Forklift hoppers slide onto the forks through slip-on fork pockets or full-length fork channels; crane hoppers hang from a bail or lifting hooks. The operator fills the hopper at the work face, moves it to the dumpster, rail car or pour point, and releases the load without anyone climbing into a bin, shoveling or standing under the material. That is the whole value proposition: fewer trips, fewer hands on the material, and no container dragged across the floor. The trade-off is that a hopper borrows capacity and reach from the machine carrying it, so the hopper and the truck have to be specified together rather than separately.
Two numbers matter, and buyers routinely confuse them. Volume capacity is how much the hopper holds. Load capacity is how much weight it is rated to carry. Light, bulky waste such as cardboard, packaging film, foam and sweepings fills the volume long before it reaches the weight limit, so buy for cubic yards. Dense material such as casting sand, demolition rubble, wet concrete or metal turnings reaches the weight limit while the hopper still looks half empty, so buy for pounds and accept a smaller box. If you don't know what your material weighs per cubic yard, weigh one filled container on a floor scale before ordering instead of estimating.
The Apex Hoppers heavy-duty line in this collection spans both axes:
| Volume capacity | Load capacity |
|---|---|
| 1/4 cu yd | 4,000 lbs |
| 1/2 cu yd | 4,000 lbs |
| 3/4 cu yd | 5,000 lbs |
| 1 cu yd | 6,000 lbs |
| 1 1/2 cu yd | 6,000 lbs |
| 2 cu yd | 6,000 lbs |
| 2 1/2 cu yd | 8,000 lbs |
| 3 cu yd | 8,000 lbs |
| 3 1/2 cu yd | 8,000 lbs |
| 4 cu yd | 8,000 lbs |
| 5 cu yd | 8,000 lbs |
Note that the five largest Apex sizes share the same 8,000 lbs rating, so moving from 2 1/2 to 5 cubic yards buys volume, not weight. If you are shopping specifically for 4,000 lb hoppers, the 1/4 and 1/2 cubic yard Apex units are the two at that rating here.
Self-dump hoppers are the general-purpose choice for shop scrap, trim waste and floor cleanup. They ride on the forks, stay latched while traveling and tip forward when the operator releases them, then return upright. The Star Industries lifting hooks in this collection are a replacement part for that style of hopper.
Open-face trash hoppers make loading easier because material can be tossed or swept straight in rather than lifted over a wall. The Star Industries Heavy Duty Forklift Trash Hopper (models 1425 and 1430) is built from 3/16 in. steel with reinforced edges, mounts on slip-on fork pockets or full-length fork channels, carries a maximum weight capacity of 5,000 lbs, and includes a safety chain and locking grab hook. Star lists it as fitting the majority of forklifts and designed for extendable reach forklifts.
Concrete hoppers are a different tool. The Star Industries Forklift Concrete Hopper w/ Swivel Chute (model 1575) holds 3/4 cu yd, weighs 770 lbs empty, and discharges through a 30 in. chute with a 40 degree swing range (20 degrees each side) and a manual gate with an adjustable multi-position handle. That controlled, aimable discharge is what separates a pour hopper from a dump hopper.
Crane dumping buckets go where a forklift can't reach. The Apex crane dumping bucket is offered as CB75, CB100, CB150 and CB200 at 3/4, 1, 1 1/2 and 2 cu yd, listed at 8,000 lbs capacity.
Check three fit points before ordering. First, fork clearance: the Apex HD25, HD200 and HD350 list a 2 3/4 in. fork clearance, so measure your fork thickness. Second, empty weight, which comes out of your payload before any material goes in — the HD25 weighs 325 lbs, the HD200 859 lbs and the HD350 1,470 lbs. Third, load center: the HD200 and HD350 are both 75 3/4 in. in overall length, which pushes the center of gravity well forward of a standard pallet load and derates what the truck can safely lift.
On the regulatory side, OSHA 1910.178(a)(4) requires the truck manufacturer's prior written approval before a truck is modified or fitted with front-end attachments that affect capacity or safe operation, and requires capacity and marking plates to be updated accordingly. OSHA 1910.178(l) requires operator training and evaluation for powered industrial trucks. ANSI/ITSDF B56.1 is the safety standard covering low-lift and high-lift trucks, including attachment marking. For crane-handled hoppers, ASME B30.20 covers below-the-hook lifting devices and addresses rated load marking and inspection.
Steel thickness and weld quality are what separate a hopper that lasts from one that cracks at the hinge. The Apex HD25, HD200 and HD350 product data lists 7GA and 1/4 in. steel, 100% MIG welded, made in the USA. Heavier material also means heavier tare weight, which is the honest trade-off — the 1,470 lb HD350 is not the unit for a lightly rated truck.
Beyond the spec sheet, confirm your dump height and overhead clearance at the point of discharge, where the hopper will be parked when empty, and whether your material needs drainage. With 15 hoppers in this collection between $591 and $4,938, the spread between a small dumping hopper and a large one is usually smaller than the cost of a second trip per shift.
