Pipe Lifting Devices and Pipe Hoist Options

Pipe lifting tools divide into three working principles, and the right one depends on pipe material, wall strength, bore access and whether you need to place pipe vertically or horizontally. Mechanical pipe hooks such as the Kenco PH12000, PH18000 and PH30000 engage the bore or the bell and rely on load weight to hold the grip — nothing to power, nothing to leak. Pipe grips and pipe lifts like the Kenco PL4500, PL7000 and PL8500 clamp the pipe body, which keeps handling controlled when a hook has no bore to catch. Vacuum pipe lifters seal against a smooth outer wall and are the usual answer when the pipe surface must stay unmarked. Each family has a published rated load and a pipe diameter or grip range; check both, because a device can be within capacity and still outside its geometry limits.

For vertical pipe lifting, the concern is not just weight but how the load behaves as it rotates from horizontal to plumb. A device rated for a straight vertical pull may see side loading during that swing. ASME B30.20, the standard covering below-the-hook lifting devices, addresses marking, inspection and use of these lifters, and ASME BTH-1 sets the design criteria they are built to. Confirm the product data supports the lift you are actually making rather than the simplest version of it.

Concrete Lifting Equipment for Barriers, Bin Blocks and Slabs

Precast concrete work is its own discipline. Two things commonly go wrong here. First, buyers size to the heaviest piece and forget that jaw opening, not capacity, is what actually stops the lift. Second, concrete varies — a wet, freshly stripped piece is heavier than the same piece cured and dry, so build margin rather than working at the stated ceiling.

Vacuum Lifters for Glass, Stone and Panel Work

Vacuum lifters trade mechanical grip for a sealed pad, which is why they dominate glass, polished stone, sheet metal and finished panels where a clamp would mark the face. Surface condition is the whole game. Porous, textured, wet, dusty or heavily contoured material will not hold a reliable seal, and a pad sized for flat plate will underperform on a curve. Redundant vacuum circuits and audible loss-of-vacuum alarms matter most when the load travels over a walkway or a work area.

Drum, Roll and Sheet Handling

Drum handling is where power source decisions get concrete. Matching the Lifter to Your Carrier and Site

Confirm carrier compatibility before capacity. A forklift-mounted attachment shifts the load center forward and reduces what the truck can safely carry; OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(a)(5) requires that a truck fitted with front-end attachments other than factory installed be marked to identify the attachment and show the approximate weight of the truck and attachment combination at maximum elevation with the load laterally centered. ANSI/ITSDF B56.1 covers the same territory for low lift and high lift trucks. For excavator-mounted work, check coupler pattern, hydraulic circuit availability and reach at the radius you actually work at, not at the boom's shortest position.

Standards, Inspection and Operator Training

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178 requires employers to train and evaluate operators of powered industrial trucks, and re-evaluate them periodically. Rigging that connects a lifter to a crane hook falls under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.184 for slings in general industry and 29 CFR 1926.251 for rigging equipment in construction. Below-the-hook devices — which is what most of the lifters on this page are — are addressed by ASME B30.20, including rated load marking and inspection intervals. Portable dockboards and dock equipment are covered by OSHA 29 CFR 1910.26, which addresses securing them against movement in use. Build a documented inspection routine around whichever of these applies to your operation, and keep manufacturer capacity data with the device rather than filed away.
