Industrial log splitters replace the maul for anyone processing firewood in volume, and the right machine depends less on brand than on where it has to work. Our log splitter lineup spans 15 models from Boss Industrial and Yardbeast, from a 5-ton electric unit sized for a garage to a 40-ton gas machine, plus three-point hitch splitters that run off a tractor's hydraulic system. Prices run from $466 to $7,480. Compare splitting force, power source and operating orientation in the grid below, then read the buying guide underneath for how those specs translate into real throughput on a wood pile.

The first decision is not tonnage, it is power source, because that determines where the machine can work and what it costs to keep running. Our 15 models cover three approaches: corded electric, self-contained gas engine, and three-point hitch units driven by a tractor. Electric splitters produce no exhaust, so they can run inside a closed garage or barn; the Boss Industrial EC5T20 draws from a 115V household outlet. Gas splitters are independent of any power drop and go wherever the wood is stacked. Three-point splitters carry no engine at all: the Boss Industrial 3PT22TE mounts to a Category 1 three-point hitch and takes pressure from the tractor hydraulic system, which removes a second engine from your maintenance list but ties the splitter to the tractor. Once power source is settled, match splitting force to the wood you actually process week to week, not to the single worst round you have ever run across.
| Type | Examples in this collection | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Electric | EC5T20 (5 ton), ES7T20 (7 ton), ED10T20 (10 ton), ED16T21 (16 ton) | Enclosed or residential spaces near a power drop; no fuel, no exhaust, less noise |
| Gas | GD20T24 (20 ton), WD27T (27 ton), WD32T (32 ton), WD37T (37 ton), Yardbeast LZ-305, LZ-505, LZ-705 | Open yards, remote lots and higher-volume work where no outlet is available |
| Three-point hitch | 3PT16T21 (16 ton), 3PT22TE (22 ton) | Farms and properties with a tractor already in service; no separate engine to fuel or service |
Boss Industrial also sells the WD27T as a bundle that pairs the 27-ton towable gas splitter with the 3PT16T21 three-point attachment, which fits Category 1 and Category 2 hitches. That combination is worth pricing out if you want a machine you can tow to the wood and a second head that stays on the tractor.
Splitting force across this collection runs from 5 tons up to 40 tons. Tonnage decides whether a round splits at all, but it does not decide how much wood you finish in an afternoon. Cycle time does, and it is published on several models here: the Boss Industrial WD27T completes a cycle in 14 seconds, the Yardbeast LZ-505 in 11 seconds, and the Yardbeast LZ-705 in 9 seconds. Over a long session those seconds compound far more than the last few tons of force.
Cycle time comes from pump capacity and cylinder geometry. The LZ-505 uses a 22 GPM two-stage pump and the LZ-705 a 28 GPM two-stage pump. A two-stage pump moves the ram quickly at low pressure and shifts to high pressure only when the wedge meets resistance, which is why a larger pump can shorten cycles without changing rated force. Cylinder dimensions matter too: the LZ-305 uses a 4.0 inch bore with a 24 inch stroke. Beam construction sets how the machine holds up over years of that duty: the LZ-705 uses a half-inch heavy-duty steel beam, while the LZ-305 and LZ-505 use 3/8 inch stock.
Check three things about your site before ordering. First, electrical supply: the EC5T20 is specified for a 115V household outlet, and any corded splitter should be run on the circuit and cord the manufacturer's manual calls for, since undersized cord is the usual cause of motors that stall under load. Second, mobility. The WD27T is listed as towable and the LZ-705 rides on ST205/75D15 tires, but confirm your hitch, lighting and local towing rules before moving any machine on a public road. Third, working position. Vertical and horizontal operation, offered on the 3PT22TE, WD27T, LZ-505 and LZ-705, lets you roll a heavy round to the beam and split it upright instead of lifting it to waist height, which is the difference between a workable day and a back injury on large-diameter wood.
Hydraulic systems fail from contamination more than from wear, so filtration and fluid changes matter. The LZ-305 carries a 6 gallon hydraulic tank with a strainer and a 10-micron oil return filter; follow the interval in the manual for your specific model rather than a general rule of thumb. On gas units the engine is the other service item, and Kohler backs the engines on the LZ-505 and LZ-705 with a 3-year commercial warranty. Keep the wedge edge and beam clean of pitch and check for cracks or deformation at the wedge base.
Operationally, the rule is simple: one person runs the splitter, and no one holds a log while the ram moves. Boss Industrial builds one-handed control into models including the EC5T20, WD27T and 3PT22TE so the operator can keep the other hand clear of the wedge. Wear eye protection and gloves, never bypass a control valve or its automatic ram return, and stop the machine before clearing a jammed round. On three-point units, set the tractor brake and shut down the PTO before approaching the beam.
Three mistakes come up repeatedly. Buying on tonnage alone is the first; a 37-ton machine with a slow cycle can finish less wood than a lighter unit that resets quickly. Ignoring log length capacity is the second, since a splitter rated for shorter rounds will not take longer ones no matter how much force it has, and the EC5T20 is specified for logs up to 20.5 inches. The third is forgetting that a three-point splitter occupies the tractor and its hydraulic circuit for as long as you are splitting, which is fine on a dedicated wood day and awkward if the same tractor is needed elsewhere.
