What load capacities are available?
Capacities run from 2,500 lb to 10,000 lb depending on the model. The SBM-25 is rated 2,500 lb, the SBM-40 4,000 lb, the SBM-80 8,000 lb, and both SBM-BFB-100 models 10,000 lb. The capacity range shown in our product specifications is 8,000 – 10,000 lb. Size the model to your heaviest planned lift, not your typical one.
How wide does the beam spread, and is it adjustable?
The spread is adjustable, and the maximum depends on the model. The SBM-25 and SBM-40 are 78 in, the SBM-80 is 96 in, and the SBM-BFB-100-6 has a 6 ft maximum spread. The SBM-BFB-100-10 is listed by capacity only, at 10,000 lb. Check beam length against your load's pick points and available headroom before ordering.
Are the upper and lower bails included with the beam?
The bails listed on this page are additional units, priced and ordered separately from the beams. Part numbers starting with SM-LB are lower bails and SM-UB are upper bails, ranging from $132.66 to $159.40. Sizes include 4.25 x 4.5 x 17.5, 6 x 7 x 15.75 and 6 x 9.25 x 19.75, matched to the -25, -40, -80 and BFB-100 beams.
Does this spreader beam need electrical power or compressed air?
No. These are mechanical below-the-hook devices with no motor, hydraulics or air supply. The beam hangs from your crane or hoist hook at the upper bail, and your slings or hooks attach at the lower bails. Adjusting the spread is a manual operation. Your lifting capacity is limited by whichever is lower: the crane, the beam, or the rigging.
What inspection or maintenance does it require?
Inspect visually before each lift for bent or cracked steel, deformed bails, worn pin holes and missing or damaged fasteners, and follow the maintenance intervals in the Vestil manual supplied with the beam. ASME B30.20, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers standard covering below-the-hook lifting devices, applies to this equipment type. Our specifications do not list a certification for these models.
