People use the words interchangeably, but they describe different tools. A hand truck stands upright, with a nose plate at the bottom and a handle at the top: you slide the plate under the load, tilt it back onto the wheels and push. A dolly is a flat or shaped base on casters that sits under the load and rolls level with the floor. Choose a hand truck for stacked cartons, appliances and items that have to go over thresholds or steps. Choose a dolly for loads that are too wide, too tall or too heavy to tilt, such as drums, machinery, furniture and crates. For full pallets, a manual pallet jack is the better fit.
Wheels decide where a hand truck works best. Pneumatic wheels cushion the load and roll over cracks, curbs and outdoor surfaces. Hard rubber wheels can't go flat and suit smooth indoor floors. Foam-filled wheels give a cushioned ride without puncture worries. On dollies you will also see glass-filled nylon (GFN), poly-on-steel, mold-on-rubber and cast iron casters: softer treads are kinder to finished floors, while harder treads roll more easily under heavy loads on concrete.
The nose plate is the shelf your load sits on, so match its width and depth to your typical carton. Some dual handle aluminum models come with an aluminum nose plate, and nose plate dollies (600 lb, in 32"×15" and 32"×18" sizes) add a rolling base under the plate. If your loads have open bottoms or lift points, the adjustable fork hand truck swaps the plate for forks on a 20" wide frame rated at 250 lb.
Handle style affects control. Dual handles give two grips for steering heavy stacks, a P-handle lets you guide the truck with one hand, and plastic dollies with a pull rope or handle let you tow instead of push.
Steel frames stand up to dock and shop abuse and are the usual choice for heavy daily use. Aluminum frames are lighter to lift into a truck bed or carry up steps. The fiber/nylon hand truck (18"×21") offers a non-metal frame that won't rust. Polyethylene dollies, including the padded-top 18"×30" model and interlocking 16"×26" dollies that lock together for longer loads, wipe clean easily. Hardwood six-wheel mover dollies (24"×48", 1,200 lb) come with a solid deck or carpeted ends to protect furniture finishes.

Every hand truck and dolly in this range comes from Vestil, which builds material handling equipment for industrial and warehouse use. If you need a larger deck for bulky or mixed loads, browse our platform trucks and carts, or see the wider hand trucks and carts selection for more upright and cart-style options.
Both terms are common, but technically a hand truck is the upright, two-wheel tool with a nose plate and handle that you tilt back to move a load. A dolly is a flat or shaped base on casters that rolls under a load and stays level. Many people call a hand truck a dolly, and convertible models blur the line by working both ways.
A hand truck is also called a two-wheeler, two-wheel dolly, sack truck, stack truck or simply a dolly. Specialized versions get names from their job, such as appliance cart, stair hand truck, cylinder hand truck or drum hand truck. The name changes by region and trade, but the design is the same: a nose plate, two main wheels and a handle.
In material handling, "truck" means any wheeled device for moving goods, which is why you also hear of platform trucks. A hand truck is simply a truck you move by hand. Dolly is the more casual term, so people often use it for hand trucks too, even though a true dolly sits flat under the load and rolls level with the floor.
A convertible hand truck works as an upright two-wheel hand truck and converts into a four-wheel platform cart for longer runs or bulky loads. Our Vestil convertible hand trucks are rated at 500 lb and come in steel or aluminum. The four wheel multi-position steel hand truck offers a similar design with a 600 lb rating.
Look for a model built for steps. The Vestil steel stair hand truck is rated at 300 lb, and the stair hand truck with four handles is rated at 500 lb, with extra grips for controlling the load. Lighter aluminum frames are also easier to carry between floors. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and your site's safety program on stairs.
A drum dolly sized for 55 gallon drums is the simplest option. The Vestil octo drum dolly is rated at 2,000 lb, the double drum dolly carries two 55 gallon drums, and tilting drum dollies are rated from 900 lb to 1200 lb. If you need to tip and wheel a drum like a hand truck, consider the multi-purpose drum and hand truck at 500 lb or 750 lb.
It depends on the load and floor. For heavy cartons on smooth floors, the Vestil wide load steel hand truck is rated at 800 lb with hard rubber wheels or 600 lb with pneumatic wheels. For rough ground, the off-road hand truck is rated at 550 lb. For loads too heavy to tilt, switch to a machinery dolly rated at 6,000 – 10,000 lb.
