Dock Equipment: What the Category Covers

Dock equipment spans several distinct product types that solve different loading problems. Dockboards and dockplates bridge the gap between a raised dock floor and a trailer bed. Edge-of-dock levelers mount to the dock face and stay there, giving you a permanent bridge without the handling of a portable board. Container ramps and walk ramps handle ground-level work, where the load has to come down out of a container or up into a truck standing on the pavement. Yard ramps serve sites with no dock at all. Around those sit the supporting items: approach ramps, safety curbs, tow bar hitches, fork pickup slots and dock loading lights. Dockboards vs. Dockplates: Getting the Bridge Right

The distinction matters more than the names suggest. A dockplate is a flat plate intended for hand trucks and pallet jacks across a small gap. A dockboard is heavier, normally carries raised side curbs, and is built for powered industrial trucks. If a forklift is going to drive across it, buy a dockboard. Substituting a dockplate is the single most common and most dangerous mistake at the dock.

Capacity comes next. OSHA 1910.26(a) requires that dockboards be capable of supporting the maximum intended load. That load is not the forklift's nameplate capacity — it is the truck's service weight plus the payload, plus any attachment, plus the operator. Size the board against that total and read the manufacturer's rating rather than estimating. The aluminum truck dockboards here are listed by capacity and size: BTA-08006630 is an 8,000 lb board at 66"×30" from $955.69, and BTA-12007230 is a 12,000 lb board at 72"×30" from $1,175.19. Container Ramps, Walk Ramps and Yard Ramps

When there is no dock, the ramp has to create the grade. Safety and Site Requirements

OSHA 1910.26 governs dockboards directly: they must be secured — anchored or equipped with devices that prevent them from slipping — and must have run-off guards on each side unless the dockboard is designed to prevent run-off. That is why side curbs are standard on truck dockboards and why curb options exist for yard ramps.

The vehicle side matters just as much. OSHA 1910.178(k)(1) requires that the brakes of a truck, trailer or railroad car be set and that wheel chocks or equivalent protection be in place before a powered industrial truck drives onto it. OSHA 1910.178(l) requires operator training and evaluation for powered industrial trucks, which includes driving on dockboards and ramps. ANSI/ITSDF B56.1 is the safety standard for low lift and high lift powered industrial trucks and covers ramp and grade operation.

Site conditions decide whether a ramp works at all. Yard ramps and container ramps need firm, level pavement with enough straight approach for a loaded truck to line up. Check the height difference between your floor and the trailer beds you actually service, not the gap, and confirm the door opening gives clearance for the ramp plus the mast height of the lift truck.

What Buyers Commonly Get Wrong

Four errors account for most returns and most near misses. Buying to the forklift's rated capacity instead of its gross loaded weight understates what the bridge has to carry. Measuring the gap instead of the height differential produces a board that is long enough but sits at too steep a grade. Ordering a dockplate for forklift traffic puts equipment on a bridge that was never built for it. And skipping the handling options — tow bar, pneumatic tires, fork pickup slots — leaves a ramp that nobody can reposition, so it stays parked at one door and the other doors go unserved. Decide the capacity, the height difference and the handling method before comparing prices.
