FAQ about this model
How much weight can the Bison CH50-OL lift?
It lifts up to 5 tons, which is 10,000 lbs or 4536 kg. That figure is the rated capacity of the hoist itself. The rest of your lifting path matters too, so confirm that the beam, trolley, slings and hardware you attach it to are each rated for at least the same weight before lifting.
What does the overload protection actually do?
It uses an integrated mechanical slip clutch that stops the load from being raised once it exceeds the rated capacity. The clutch is built into the hoist, so there is no separate device to fit or adjust. It protects the hoist and load chain from being pulled past 5 tons, but it is not a substitute for knowing your load weight.
Does this hoist need electricity or compressed air?
No power of any kind is required. This is a manual chain hoist, raised and lowered by pulling the hand chain, so there is no supply, compressor or battery to arrange. That makes it practical for remote bays, outdoor yards, field service and any site where running power is impractical. Lifting speed depends on the operator.
What is the load chain made of, and how does it hold a load?
The load chain is Grade 80 alloy steel, heat treated, and the hoist uses a dual pawl braking system that holds the load in position when you stop pulling the hand chain. Inspect the chain before each use for stretch, nicks, gouges or twisted links, and take the hoist out of service if you find any.
What standards does it comply with?
It is built to ASME B30.16 and ANSI/ASME HST-2. ASME B30.16 is the safety standard covering overhead hoists of this type, and ANSI/ASME HST-2 is the performance standard for hand chain manual hoists. Both standards also place requirements on the owner for inspection, operation and record keeping, so check your site procedures against them.
Who is this hoist a good fit for, and who should look elsewhere?
It fits shops, garages, fabrication bays and field work where loads up to 5 tons are lifted occasionally and no power source is available. It is a poorer fit for high-cycle or production lifting, where a powered hoist usually makes more sense. Construction is all-steel, and the hoist carries a 12 month warranty.
