Most buyers shopping for a car lift are choosing between four layouts, and the decision is driven by what happens to the vehicle once it is in the air. A two-post lift raises the vehicle by its frame or pinch welds and leaves all four wheels hanging free, which is what you want for brake, suspension, exhaust and driveline work. The two-post automobile lift models here run from the 12,000 lb AMGO OH-12 and BP-12 up to the OH-15 at 15,000 lbs and the OH-18 at 18,000 lbs.
A four-post lift is drive-on: the vehicle sits on runways with its suspension loaded. That makes it faster for fluid service, exhaust and body work, long-term storage, and any shop that wants to move vehicles on and off the lift quickly. The AMGO PRO series spans 12,000 lbs (PRO-12, PRO-12A, PRO-12SX, and the PRO-12SX + J6A combo) through 14,000, 18,000, 30,000 and 40,000 lbs, and Katool adds the KT-4H120X at 12,000 lbs and the KT-4H150 at 15,000 lbs with a rolling jack. Because a four-post keeps the wheels loaded, wheels-free work requires a rolling jack or jack tray, such as the AMGO 40808 jack tray listed for parking lifts.
Scissor lifts trade some under-vehicle access for a much smaller footprint and a cleaner bay when they are not in use. The catalog includes the low-profile XL-7 at 7,000 lbs, the flush-mount XL-9F at 9,000 lbs, the Katool KT-X95 at 7,716 lbs, and larger alignment-capable units in the AX-12, AX-12A, DX-12A and AX-16A. Single-post lifts — the AMGO SPL-7 and Katool KT-SPL700 at 7,000 lbs — occupy the least floor area and are aimed at tight bays and vehicle storage rather than heavy service.
Rated capacity is the first filter, and the rule is simple: the lift's rating must cover the heaviest vehicle you expect to put on it, not the average one. Half-ton and three-quarter-ton pickups, van conversions, and anything with a service body or upfit weigh considerably more than the passenger cars in the same bay, so shops buying for mixed work usually step up rather than sizing to today's typical job.
Read the rating carefully on multi-vehicle equipment. The AMGO 409-DP is listed at 9,000 lbs total but 6,000 lbs per vehicle — a total figure and a per-position figure are not interchangeable. Weight distribution matters as well: a lift's rating assumes the load is positioned as the manufacturer intends, which is why arm placement on a two-post and vehicle centering on a four-post are part of rated performance, not optional technique.
Car lift dimensions decide whether a model fits your building before capacity ever comes into play. The four figures to check are overall length including ramps, overall width, maximum lifting height, and minimum (lowered) height. Verified dimensions for several models in this collection:
| Model | Capacity | Overall length (inc. ramps) | Overall width | Max. lifting height | Minimum height |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AMGO PRO-40E | 40,000 lbs | 425 3/16" | 151 1/2" | 75 3/8" | 10 3/8" |
| AMGO PRO-40 | 40,000 lbs | 366 1/8" | 151 1/2" | 75 3/8" | 10 3/8" |
| AMGO PRO-30E | 30,000 lbs | 366 1/8" | 147 9/16" | 75 3/16" | 10 1/4" |
| AMGO PRO-30 | 30,000 lbs | 307 1/16" | 147 9/16" | 75 3/16" | 10 1/4" |
| AMGO AX-16A | 16,000 lbs | 274 3/16" | 94 1/16" | 72 13/16" | 13" |
| AMGO AX-12A | 12,000 lbs | 258" | 90 3/16" | 72 13/16" | 12" |
Ceiling height is the constraint people underestimate. The PRO-30, PRO-30E, PRO-40 and PRO-40E all have an overall height of 92", and you still need clearance above that for the tallest vehicle you will raise, plus room for lights, doors, heaters and sprinkler heads. Minimum height matters at the other end: the AX-12A drops to 12" and the AX-16A to 13", which determines whether low-clearance vehicles can be driven or rolled on without ramp extensions.
A parking lift for car storage solves a different problem than a service lift: it doubles the vehicles you can keep in a fixed footprint. In this collection that includes the AMGO 409-HP at 9,000 lbs, the 409-DP and 409-DPX double parking four-post lifts at 9,000 lbs, the SPL-7 single-post parking lift, and the Katool KT-P2700, a 6,600 lb two-post floor plate parking lift. A car parking lifter used for storage is normally left loaded for long periods, so lock engagement, drip trays for the vehicle above, and the height of the vehicle underneath drive the choice more than lifting speed does.
Every surface-mounted lift depends on the slab beneath it. Concrete thickness, compressive strength, cure time and minimum distance from slab edges and seams are specified by the lift manufacturer in the installation instructions for that model — those requirements vary by lift and should never be assumed from another model's numbers. ANSI/ALI ALIS, the Automotive Lift Institute standard for lift installation and service, covers installation requirements for automotive lifts. Confirm the power unit's voltage and phase against your shop supply before ordering, since single-phase and three-phase versions of otherwise identical lifts are common. Note that every lift in this collection is surface-mounted; if you are researching an in-ground car lift, that is a different installation category involving excavation and is not part of this range.
ANSI/ALI ALOIM, the Automotive Lift Institute standard covering lift operation, inspection and maintenance, addresses periodic inspection of automotive lifts by a qualified lift inspector along with the owner's routine maintenance duties. Day to day, that means checking that locks audibly engage on the way up, that arm restraints and adapters are in good condition on two-post lifts, that cables and chains on four-post and parking lifts are equalized and lubricated, and that nothing is stored under a raised vehicle. If third-party certification matters to your insurer or your municipality, check whether the specific model you are considering is listed under ALI's certification program to ANSI/ALI ALCTV rather than assuming it applies to a whole brand.
