FAQ about this model
How much material does the HD500 hold?
It holds 5 cubic yards and is rated for 8,000 lbs of load. Which limit you reach first depends on what you are dumping: light, bulky waste fills the volume before it approaches the weight rating, while dense material such as wet scrap or masonry rubble hits 8,000 lbs well before the hopper is full. Load to whichever limit comes first.
What are the dimensions, and will it fit my staging area?
Overall length is 75 3/4", overall width is 50 1/4", and height is 47 1/4". The base is smaller at 60" long by 42 1/2" wide, with the body opening out to a top length of 73". Plan aisle, doorway and storage clearance against the overall figures rather than the base, since the widest point is above floor level.
How is it handled and emptied?
By forklift. The specification lists a fork clearance of 2 3/4", so check that your forks and carriage suit that opening before ordering. No electrical or hydraulic requirements are listed for this unit, so there is nothing to plug in or connect. Approach, lift and dump from a stable position with the load centered in the hopper.
What is it made of?
7 gauge and 1/4" steel, 100% MIG welded, made in the USA. The thicker 1/4" plate is used where impact and abrasion are heaviest, and continuous MIG welding rather than stitch welding is what allows an empty weight of 1836 lbs to carry a rated 8,000 lbs. Expect scrapes and dents in service rather than seam failure.
What size forklift do I need?
One rated to lift the empty hopper plus the load at the correct load center. The hopper weighs 1836 lbs empty and carries up to 8,000 lbs, and at 75 3/4" long it puts weight well forward of the forks. Read your truck's capacity plate at that extended load center, not its headline rating, before committing.
Who is this hopper not right for?
Anyone whose loads exceed either rating. If you regularly move more than 5 cubic yards per cycle, or single loads above 8,000 lbs, you need a larger unit. At the other end, operations dumping small volumes of light material are paying for steel and lift capacity they will not use. It also assumes forklift handling.
