Aluminum vs. Steel Gantry Cranes

Aluminum gantry cranes, such as Vestil's Fixed Height Aluminum (FHA) and Adjustable Height Aluminum (AHA) lines, are built for jobs where the crane gets moved often by hand. A lighter frame means one or two people can reposition it across a shop floor between tasks without a forklift or tow motor. Steel gantry cranes, including the Fixed Steel (FHS) and Adjustable Steel (AHS) series, trade some of that portability for higher capacity and a lower price per pound of rated load — useful when the crane stays in one work cell and gets loaded near its rated limit regularly. Neither material choice changes how the crane should be inspected or maintained; it changes how often you expect to relocate it.

Fixed Height, Adjustable Height, and Telescoping Options

Fixed-height gantry cranes (FHA, FHS) are set at one beam height and are the simplest and typically least expensive option when your lift point doesn't change. Adjustable-height models (AHA, AHS) let you raise or lower the beam to match different load heights or clearance under the crane — useful in a shop that handles varied equipment. Casters and Mobility

Caster type determines where a gantry crane can actually be used. V-groove casters track along a rail or embedded track for repeatable straight-line movement, which matters when the crane needs to return to the same load position every cycle. Total-locking casters add a positive brake at each wheel so the crane stays put once positioned under load — important any time the load path isn't perfectly level or the crane sits near an aisle. Matching caster type to floor condition is one of the most common sizing mistakes buyers make; a smooth-floor caster on a cracked or gapped slab will bind or stall under load.

Standards, Safety, and Maintenance

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.179 covers overhead and gantry cranes, including requirements for inspection, maintenance, and load limits, and applies to gantry cranes used in general industry. ASME B30.2 addresses overhead and gantry cranes with top-running trolley hoists and is the design and use reference most manufacturers build to. Regardless of frame material or capacity, a gantry crane should be inspected before each use for beam deflection, caster wear, and hoist condition, and loads should never exceed the rated capacity stamped on the unit. Operators moving a loaded gantry crane should keep the load low and centered between the legs — most tip-over incidents happen from rolling a crane with the load off-center or the casters unlocked on a slope.

Accessories That Improve Gantry Crane Use
