Thread Types: M22, NPT and Garden Hose Thread

Three thread families show up on pressure washer plumbing, and they are not interchangeable. M22 is the metric thread used on most consumer and light commercial machine outlets, hose ends and gun inlets. Brass, Stainless Steel or Coated Steel

Material choice tracks duty cycle and water quality more than price. Matching Rating, Size and Flow to Your Machine

Every connection point should be rated at or above the machine's maximum working pressure, and the weakest fitting in the line sets the ceiling for the whole assembly. Check the pump's rated pressure on its data plate rather than the marketing figure on the box. Size matters as much as rating: 1/4" connections are typical on lighter machines and short hose runs, while 3/8" is the common choice where higher flow or longer hose lengths would otherwise cause pressure drop. Stepping down to a smaller quick connect in the middle of a 3/8" line creates a restriction the pump has to fight. Also confirm hot-water suitability on the individual product listing before using any fitting on a heated machine — seal material, not just body material, decides that.

Installation and Maintenance

Wrap NPT male threads with PTFE tape or use a liquid pipe sealant, keeping the first thread clear so nothing sheds into the pump or nozzle. Tighten with a wrench on the hex, not by hand pressure on the hose. Garden hose and M22 connections seal on a washer or O-ring instead, so tape does nothing there — replace the seal when it hardens, flattens or cracks.
