Product Overview
In short
The Bison Lifting VPG-5 is a heavy-duty vertical plate clamp designed for secure and efficient transport of steel plates up to 5 tons (10,000 lb). It features a precision-machined jaw mechanism with a 0.75" to 2.5" opening and a positive lock system for a non-slip grip. Constructed from forged alloy steel, it ensures durability and meets ASME B30.20 safety standards for industrial applications.

Heavy-Duty 5 Ton Vertical Plate Lifting Clamp

The Bison Lifting VPG-5 Vertical Plate Clamp is engineered for the secure and efficient vertical transport of steel plates in industrial environments. With a robust 5-ton (10,000 lb) capacity, this heavy-duty clamp is an essential tool for manufacturing, fabrication, and construction applications. Its precision-machined jaw mechanism is designed to provide a positive, non-slip grip on materials ranging from 0.75 inches to 2.5 inches thick, ensuring stability and minimizing movement during lifts. The integrated large shackle facilitates quick and secure attachment to various hoist hooks and lifting devices.

Constructed from high-grade forged alloy steel, the VPG-5 offers exceptional durability and resistance to the rigorous demands of daily industrial use. A critical safety feature is its positive lock system, which maintains clamping force even when the plate is not under tension, significantly enhancing operational security. Each clamp undergoes stringent testing and is fully compliant with ASME B30.20 standards for below-the-hook lifting devices, providing assurance of its reliability and adherence to safety protocols. This design commitment ensures a long service life and consistent performance.

FAQ about this model

How much weight can the VPG-5 lift?

The rated capacity is 5 tons, which is 10,000 lbs (4536 kg). That is the working load limit for the clamp used in the vertical orientation it is built for, and each unit is proof tested to 200% of the working load limit. Plate heavier than 10,000 lbs needs a higher-rated clamp or a multi-point rigging arrangement rated for the actual load.

What plate thickness does the jaw accept?

The jaw opening is 0.75" to 2.5" (19 mm to 63.5 mm), so the clamp grips plate within that thickness range. Material thinner than 0.75" or thicker than 2.5" will not seat correctly in the jaw and should not be lifted with this clamp. Measure your plate at the exact point where the clamp will be positioned before ordering.

Can it be used to lift plate lying flat?

No. The lifting orientation is vertical, meaning the plate hangs on edge with the clamp gripping the top edge or face. Lifting plate that is lying flat, or rotating a plate from flat to vertical, calls for a clamp specifically rated for horizontal or turning duty. Using a vertical clamp outside its intended orientation is not covered by its rating.

How does the clamp stay attached to the plate?

It uses a positive lock cam and jaw system. The cam bites into the plate and tightens as the lifting load increases, while the positive lock keeps the jaw closed on the plate when the line is slack, such as during positioning or when setting the load down. The clamp is released manually once the plate is supported.

What is it made of and how heavy is it to handle?

The clamp is forged alloy steel and weighs approximately 45 lbs (20.4 kg). That is a two-handed lift for most people, so plan for how it will be carried to the plate and stored between lifts. Forged alloy steel is the standard construction for this class of gripping device because the jaw and cam see high, concentrated loads.

What standards does it meet, and what warranty is included?

It is built to comply with ASME B30.20, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers standard covering below-the-hook lifting devices, and with EN 13155 from the European Committee for Standardization, which covers non-fixed load lifting attachments. Every clamp is proof tested to 200% of the working load limit. The clamp carries a 12-month warranty.
