How much weight can the UPG-3 lift?

The UPG-3 has a lifting capacity of 3 Tons (6000 lbs). That is the maximum rated load for the clamp, so the plate being lifted must weigh 6000 lbs or less. The rigging above the clamp — sling, hook and hoist — needs to be rated for at least the same load, and the plate thickness must fall within the jaw opening.

What plate thickness does it grip?

The jaw opening is 0 - 1.5 inches, so it grips plate from zero up to 1.5 inches thick. Plate thicker than that will not seat in the jaw. If you handle a mix of thicknesses, measure the thickest plate in your range against the 1.5 inch limit before ordering, because the opening does not extend beyond it.

How heavy is the clamp itself?

The clamp weighs 25 lbs. One person can normally carry and attach it by hand, though 25 lbs is heavy enough to matter if the clamp is moved and set repeatedly through a shift. That weight also counts against your hoist's rated capacity, since the hoist is carrying the clamp plus the plate, not the plate alone.

What is it made of and what standard does it meet?

The body is forged alloy steel, and the clamp complies with ASME B30.20, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers standard for below-the-hook lifting devices. Forged alloy steel is the standard choice for load-bearing clamp bodies. ASME B30.20 sets requirements for the design, marking, inspection and testing of devices that attach between the hook and the load.

What warranty comes with it, and what maintenance should I expect?

It carries a 12 month warranty from Bison Lifting. Separate from warranty coverage, ASME B30.20 requires below-the-hook lifting devices to be inspected on a regular schedule, so plan for routine checks of the jaw, pivot and body. Wear in the gripping surfaces is the usual reason a plate clamp is retired, and that is normal service wear.

Who is this clamp right for, and who should look at something else?

It suits operations that regularly lift plate up to 6000 lbs and up to 1.5 inches thick, such as fabricators, steel service centers, and maintenance and scrap yards. It is not the right clamp if your plate exceeds either limit, if you need to lift several plates at once, or if you are handling round stock, beams or other shapes the jaw is not built to grip.

Warranty

All Bison products are covered by a 12-month warranty from the date of shipment against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use. Bison will repair or replace defective parts at no charge (installation excluded). A return merchandise authorization (RMA) is required before returning any product; items must be shipped freight-prepaid with a written description of the issue. Items returned outside the warranty scope are subject to a 25% restocking fee. Returns are not accepted after 30 days from the date of shipment. Customized items are non-returnable.

How long will it take for my order to ship? When will I receive it?
Most orders are processed within 1-2 business days, starting the business day following the date the order was placed. Once dispatched, standard shipping typically takes an additional 1-5 business days (starting the business day after shipment).
