FAQ about this model
What is the rated capacity, and how do I check my plate is within it?
The clamp is rated at 1 Ton, which is 2000 lbs or 1000 kg, and it is built to a 4:1 safety factor. That rating is the maximum weight of the plate itself. Weigh or calculate the plate before lifting rather than estimating, and remember the rating applies to the clamp only, not to the sling, hook or crane above it.
How thick a plate will the jaw take?
The jaw opening range is 0 to 1 inch, or 0 to 25 mm. Plate thicker than that will not enter the jaw, and the range is fixed. Measure your plate where the clamp will actually sit rather than at an edge that may be tapered, rolled or coated, and confirm the reading falls inside the range before you rig the lift.
Can it be used for horizontal lifting and turning, not just vertical?
Yes. The listed applications are vertical lifting, horizontal lifting and turning. The 360 degree swivel shackle lets the clamp follow the direction of pull as the plate rotates, so the shackle stays in line with the load through a turn. Stay within the 1 Ton rating and the 0 to 1 inch jaw range, and follow Bison Lifting's instructions for each orientation.
How does it grip, and what maintenance does it need?
Grip comes from a spring-loaded cam in a forged alloy steel body. The spring holds the cam against the plate before the lift, and tension on the shackle drives it in harder as the load comes up. Maintenance is mainly inspection: check the cam and jaw for worn teeth or packed debris, keep the pivot moving freely, and remove the clamp from service if the body is cracked or deformed.
What standard does it meet, and what warranty comes with it?
It is listed as compliant with ASME B30.20, the ASME standard covering below-the-hook lifting devices, and it carries a 12 month warranty. The SKU is UPG-1. It suits shops handling steel plate up to 1 inch thick and up to 1 Ton in weight. It is not the right clamp for thicker plate or heavier loads, which need a larger capacity model.
