A forklift hopper attachment turns a lift truck into a one-operator dumping station: waste, scrap, or trim is collected at the workstation, carried, and discharged without a second machine or a manual transfer. This collection holds 63 hoppers, dumpers, and fork-mounted handling attachments from Vestil, Apex Hoppers, Star Industries, and Abaco Machines, priced from $100 to $28,026. Self-dumping, drop-bottom, low-profile, overhead, and rotator styles are here, along with drum grippers and rotators, trash can and tote dumpers, crate turners, bin compactors, and a hydraulic grapple. Compare rated load, cubic-yard volume, and fork pocket fit below.

A forklift hopper attachment is a steel bin that slips over the forks so one operator can collect, move, and dump material without a second machine. The 63 products here from Vestil, Apex Hoppers, Star Industries, and Abaco Machines cover several distinct designs, and they are not interchangeable. Self-dumping hoppers pivot forward on a trunnion and release when the operator pulls a rope or trips a rear release; the Star Industries 1805N uses that arrangement. Drop-bottom hoppers such as the Vestil DBH-100-3 keep the bin level and open the floor instead of tipping, which suits discharging into a deep container. Overhead self-dumping bins like the Vestil SDB-200-6 are built to clear the wall of a receiving container before they release. Powered dumpers — rotator box hoppers, electric/hydraulic box dumpers, lift-and-dump drum dumpers, and the HMG hydraulic grapple — run off the truck's auxiliary hydraulics rather than gravity, and require a truck plumbed for a third function. Around those sit the accessory items: casters, poly lids, drain plug options, and sideways-dumping conversions.
Two numbers decide the purchase, and buyers routinely confuse them. Volume, in cubic yards, is how much the bin holds. Rated load, in pounds, is how much it may legally carry. Light bulky waste — corrugated, film, foam, trim — fills the volume long before weight becomes the limit, so buy cubic yards and cut the number of trips. Dense material — turnings, castings, wet sludge, rubble — reaches the weight rating while the bin still looks half empty, so buy pounds and accept a smaller bin. The models in this collection with full published spec data show the spread:
| Model | Volume | Rated load | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vestil DBH-100-3 | 1 cu yd | 3,000 lb | Drop bottom; $1,048.77 |
| Star Industries 1805N | 1/2 cu yd | 4,000 lb without casters | Narrow profile; 42 in x 32 in base |
| Vestil HMG-35-4 | Grapple | 4,000 lb | 35 in opening; $1,841.96 |
| Star Industries 1425 / 1430 | Open face | 5,000 lb | 3/16 in steel, reinforced edges |
| Apex Hoppers HD200 | 2 cu yd | 6,000 lb | 859 lb empty; 7GA and 1/4 in steel |
| Vestil SDB-200-6 | 2 cu yd | 6,000 lb | Overhead self-dumping bin; $3,394.74 |
The empty weight matters as much as the rating. The HD200 weighs 859 lb before anything goes in it, and that weight comes off your truck's usable capacity every trip. Steel thickness is the other durability signal: the Star heavy duty hoppers use 3/16 in plate and the HD200 uses 7GA with 1/4 in sections, 100% MIG welded, made in the USA.
Most gravity hoppers are slip-on. Before ordering, measure your fork thickness and width at the heel, not at the tip, and compare against the listed pocket or channel dimensions — the Apex HD200 lists 2 3/4 in fork clearance, for example. Full-length fork channels, as on the Star heavy duty models, spread load along the whole blade and tolerate rough material better than short pockets. Then check the footprint against your aisles and your dock: the Star 1805N's 42 in x 32 in base and narrow profile exist specifically for tight runs, while a 2 cu yd bin such as the HD200 measures 75 3/4 in overall length and 50 1/4 in overall width. Every slip-on bin needs a positive restraint. The Star hoppers ship with a safety chain and locking grab hook; fit it around the carriage or mast on every move, not just long ones.
A hopper's rating is only one of two limits. The second is your forklift's capacity with the attachment mounted, which is always lower than the plate figure for bare forks — the attachment adds dead weight and pushes the combined load center forward. OSHA 1910.178(a)(5) requires that when a truck is equipped with front-end attachments other than factory-installed ones, the user request that the truck be marked to identify the attachment and show the approximate weight of the truck-and-attachment combination at maximum elevation with the load laterally centered. OSHA 1910.178(a)(4) also states that modifications and additions affecting capacity and safe operation are not to be made without the manufacturer's prior written approval, with the capacity plates changed accordingly. ANSI/ITSDF B56.1, the safety standard for low-lift and high-lift industrial trucks, covers attachment use and load handling in more detail. Work from the updated marking, not the original plate.
OSHA 1910.178(l) requires that operators of powered industrial trucks be trained and evaluated as competent before operating independently, with an evaluation at least once every three years. That applies to trucks fitted with hoppers, and site-specific training should cover the dump cycle itself. Practically: come to a full stop on level ground, set the brake, and raise only as high as needed to clear the receiving container's wall. Keep the mast vertical or slightly back until the moment of release, keep bystanders out of the dump arc, and never let anyone reach into a raised bin. Sticky or frozen material that hangs up in a bin is a common cause of sudden, unbalanced release — break it free from the ground, not from the seat.
Gravity hoppers have few wear points but they matter: the trunnion pivot, the latch mechanism, the release rope or rear-release linkage, and the fork pockets. Inspect welds and the pocket mouths for spread or cracking, and keep the latch clean so it re-engages fully on lowering. For wet waste, order a drain plug option rather than tipping a full bin of liquid; Vestil offers 3/4 in and 2 in drain plug options for D, H, and P style hoppers. Poly lids keep rain out of bins parked outdoors, and casters let a hopper be repositioned on the floor without the truck. The three mistakes we see most: buying on cubic yards alone when the material is dense, forgetting the bin's empty weight when derating the truck, and specifying a gravity self-dumping hopper for an application that actually needs a powered box dumper or rotator for controlled discharge. Vestil listings in this collection carry a 1-Year Limited warranty.
