Tire Changers

Tire changers on this page run from a manual bench unit for 12–22 in wheels to hydraulic truck tire changers that handle 55 in assemblies weighing up to 838 lbs. All 15 machines are Katool, priced from $448 to $6,900. The lineup covers wheel clamp swing- and tilt-arm changers, a center post model, a vertical press, mobile and heavy duty truck changers, a manual motorcycle changer, plus a wheel balancer and a combination brake lathe. Choose by the rim diameters you see most, the heaviest wheel you will lift onto the table, and the power and air actually available at your bay.

How to Choose a Tire Changer

A tire changer machine is sized by three things: the rim diameters that come through your bay most often, the weight of the heaviest assembly an operator has to load, and the utilities you already have. Arm style, control layout and bead breaker design all follow from those three. Passenger and light truck work is handled by wheel clamp machines with a rotating table. Commercial truck, bus, agricultural and equipment wheels need a hydraulic changer with a center chuck and a lift that takes the wheel off the floor, because those assemblies are too heavy to manhandle onto a table.

Price tracks capability closely here. The $448 to $6,900 span in this collection separates a manual bench changer at one end from hydraulic truck equipment at the other. If your wheel mix is drifting upward in diameter and weight, buying one step above today's average is usually cheaper than buying a second machine in two years.

Tire Changer Types in This Collection

  • Manual changers. The Katool KT-2002 covers 12–22 in wheels with no power and no air. Bench or floor mounted, it suits farms, small fleets with occasional flats, and trailer or utility tires.
  • Wheel clamp, swing arm and tilt arm. The KT-T800, KT-T830, KT-T835 and KT-T850 use a self-centering clamp on a rotating table with a pneumatic side bead breaker. The KT-T850 tilts its arm back for loading; the KT-T835 is rated for wheels up to 41 in; the KT-T830 and KT-T835 list 2 HP motors, and the KT-T830 runs on 110V.
  • Center post. The KT-T900 clamps through the wheel's center bore instead of gripping the rim edge, which keeps hardware away from painted and polished faces.
  • Vertical press. The KT-T855 presses the sidewall down with a shovel rated at 2,500 kg (about 5,511 lbs). It clamps 12–24 in from outside or 14–28 in from inside, and takes tires up to 43.3 in diameter and 12.8 in wide. This is the layout for stiff low profile and run-flat tires.
  • Truck changers. The KT-T260 covers 14–42 in rims. The KT-T160 and KT-TV910 are hydraulic; the KT-TV910 accepts wheels to 55 in diameter, 18 in wide and 838 lbs, with a hydraulic bead breaking cylinder around 6,900 lbs of force and a 19–26 in rim clamping range.
  • Mobile truck. The KT-308 is built to travel to the wheel: 13–26 in rims, 54 in maximum wheel diameter, 70 cm maximum width and 750 kg wheel capacity.
  • Motorcycle. The KT-MOTO1001 is a manual changer for bike wheels, where rim finish matters more than cycle time.

Rim Range, Power and Air Supply

The figures below are taken from our product data for these specific models. Confirm the rim range against your own wheel mix before ordering, not after.

ModelRim or wheel rangePower supply
KT-200212–22 in wheelsManual, none required
KT-T85512–24 in outer clamp, 14–28 in inner support110 V / 60 Hz, 1.5 kW, approx. 4.7 A
KT-T88013–26 in wheel diameter110–120 V or 220–240 V, market dependent
KT-T835Wheels up to 41 in2 HP
KT-T26014–42 inNot listed
KT-30813–26 in rim, 750 kg wheel400 V / 3 phase
KT-TV91019–26 in rim, 55 in wheel, 838 lbs220–240 / 380–400 V, 1 or 3 phase, 50 Hz

Single phase covers the light duty end of the collection, and the KT-T855 and KT-B760 are listed at 110 V. The heavy truck machines are different: the KT-308 is listed at 400 V three phase and the KT-TV910 at 220–240 or 380–400 V, single or three phase, 50 Hz. Settle voltage, phase and frequency with your electrician before the machine arrives, because adding a three phase drop or a converter after delivery is the expensive way to do it.

Air matters as much as electricity on pneumatic machines. The KT-T855 calls for an air source of 0.8–1.0 MPa (116–145 psi), and the KT-T880 uses pneumatic bead breaking with foot pedal control. An undersized or slow-recovering compressor is a common cause of sluggish bead breaking that gets blamed on the changer. Plan floor space and load path too: the C9372 brake lathe weighs about 661 lbs (300 kg) and the KT-308 has a net weight of 470 kg.

Safety and Operator Training

OSHA 1910.177 governs servicing multi-piece and single piece rim wheels on large vehicles such as trucks, buses and off-road equipment. It requires employers to train tire servicing employees and to demonstrate that they can service rim wheels safely, and it requires a restraining device or barrier for inflating multi-piece rim wheels. If you are buying a truck changer, budget for the restraining device and the training program alongside the machine, not as an afterthought. OSHA 1910.147, the lockout/tagout standard, applies when employees service or maintain the machine itself and unexpected energization could injure them. Read the manufacturer's manual for each specific model, since clamping and bead breaking procedures differ between wheel clamp, center post and vertical press designs.

Wheel Balancing and Brake Service

A changer without a balancer generates comebacks for vibration. The KT-B760 wheel balancer handles rims up to 30 in maximum diameter and runs on 110 V, which makes it a straightforward pairing with the 110 V changers in this collection. For shops adding undercar work, the C9372 combination brake lathe turns rotors from 4 to 20 in (102–508 mm) up to 2.85 in (73 mm) thick, drums from 6 to 19.5 in (152–500 mm), and flywheels from 6 to 24 in, at spindle speeds of 70–320 RPM on 110 V or 220 V, 50/60 Hz.

Maintenance and What Buyers Get Wrong

  • Specifying on rim diameter alone. Wheel weight and overall width decide whether an operator can safely load the assembly. The KT-308 lists 750 kg wheel capacity and the KT-TV910 838 lbs for exactly this reason.
  • Ignoring phase and frequency. A three phase, 50 Hz truck changer is not a plug-in purchase in a single phase shop.
  • Starving the machine of air. Match compressor output to the pressure the machine specifies, then check it at the machine, not at the tank.
  • Skipping bead lubricant. Dry mounting is the fastest route to torn beads, scuffed rim flanges and damaged mount/demount heads.
  • Forgetting TPMS sensors. Position the valve stem deliberately on every demount and remount; sensor replacement erases the margin on a tire job.
  • No consumables budget. Mount/demount heads, plastic rim protectors, clamp jaw covers and bead lubricant are recurring costs on any high-volume changer.

Routine upkeep is short: drain the compressor and air line filter, keep the lubricator filled where one is fitted, grease the slides and clamping jaws on schedule, check hydraulic fluid level and hose condition on the KT-T160, KT-TV910 and KT-308, and replace worn plastic protectors before they let steel touch a rim.
