Specialty lifters handle loads that plain forks, a bare hook or a wrapped sling cannot hold safely: drums, gas cylinders, steel coils and sheet, cable reels, bulk bags, curbs and precast concrete bin blocks. This collection lists 185 specialty lifting attachments and handling units from Abaco Machines, Vestil, Kenco, EOSLift, Loflin Fabrication and Ballymore, from $8 to $51,443. It covers below-the-hook lifters for cranes and hoists, forklift- and machine-mounted grabs and clamps, and self-contained floor equipment such as drum trucks. Match the lifter to the load's filled weight and grip dimension first, then to the machine carrying it.

A specialty lifter is a purpose-built device that grips a load by its own geometry instead of balancing it on forks or hanging it from a bare hook. Drums, compressed gas cylinders, steel coils, sheet stacks, cable reels, bulk bags, curbs and precast bin blocks share one problem: they are heavy, awkwardly shaped, and unforgiving when they shift. The specialty lifting attachments in this collection solve that in three broad ways — below-the-hook devices that hang from a crane or hoist, attachments that mount to a forklift or machine, and self-contained floor equipment an operator moves by hand or by hydraulic pump.
Work the selection in order: the load, then the carrier, then the site. Filled weight, the outside dimension where the device will grip, and whether the load must stay upright, tilt, pour or fully invert will eliminate most of the catalog immediately.
Drum handling is the largest slice of this category, and the choice usually comes down to how far the drum travels and what happens at the end of the trip. Manual units such as the Vestil Manual Low Profile Hydraulic Drum Truck (LPDT), the Pallet Straddling Drum Truck (PSDT) and the Ergonomic Drum Truck with Scale move drums at floor level, tilt them for storage, and in the scale version weigh them without a second handling step. The Vestil PSDT-ADP-2136 pallet straddle drum truck is rated 7,000 lb.
When a crane or hoist is already overhead, below-the-hook drum lifters beat manual handling. The collection includes vertical, near-vertical and horizontal styles — the Vertical Drum Lifter (VDL), Near Vertical Drum Lifter (NVD), Horizontal Drum Positioner (HDT) and Crane/Hoist Drum Lifters (CHDL) — plus drum grabs, the Horizontal Semi-Automatic Drum Tong (DTH), and a Drum Lifter/Palletizer (DM) for building or breaking down pallet loads. For dispensing work, the Vestil Semi-Electric Powered Drum Gripper (SL-118-PDGR) is listed with a 118 in dispense height.
Two details decide whether a drum lifter actually works: the drum's construction and the condition of its rim. A device that grips a rolled steel rim will not hold a plastic or fiber drum the same way, and a dented or corroded rim is not a gripping surface. Confirm the filled weight with the drum's actual contents rather than assuming, and note that OSHA 1910.106 addresses the storage and dispensing of flammable liquids, including bonding and grounding during transfer.
Outside drum work, the same below-the-hook principle covers precast concrete, mill products and awkward rolled goods: Kenco bin block and curb lifts, the Vestil Steel Sheet Lifter, Coil Lifter, Reel Lifter (CRL), Bag Lifter (BBL) and Magnetic Easy Lift. On clamp-style lifters, grip range is a hard limit that buyers routinely overlook — a lifter sized for a wide block will not close on a narrow one, no matter how much capacity it has.
| Product | Model | Capacity | Grip Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kenco Monument & Curb Lift | TSL15C4T16 | 1,500 lbs | 4″ – 16″ (adjustable) |
| Kenco Bin Block Lift | BLK6K24T30 | 6,000 lbs | 24″ – 30″ |
| Kenco Bin Block Lift | KL9K26T36 | 9,000 lb (4,082 kg) | 26″ – 36″ (66 – 91 cm) |
| Vestil Steel Sheet Lifter | SSL-2086-10 | 10,000 lb | Not listed |
Two things follow from that table. First, the lifter's own dead weight counts against the hoist's rated capacity along with the load, so a hook rated for the block alone is not rated for the lift. Second, freight matters: the KL9K26T36 lists a shipping weight of about 650 lb (295 kg) and a shipping size of 57″ x 24″ x 48″, which means a forklift or crane at the receiving point, not two people and a tailgate.
Every mounted attachment takes capacity away from the truck carrying it. The attachment's own weight and the way it pushes the load center forward both reduce net capacity, and OSHA 1910.178(a)(4) states that modifications or additions affecting capacity and safe operation shall not be made without the manufacturer's prior written approval, with the capacity and operation plates changed accordingly. ANSI/ITSDF B56.1 covers safety requirements for powered and non-powered industrial trucks more broadly.
Site conditions narrow the field further. Washdown, food, pharmaceutical and corrosive-chemical areas point to the stainless steel drum lifters, stainless drum trucks and the stainless hydraulic foot pump roll handler in this collection. Rough outdoor ground and precast yards favor rigged below-the-hook gear over wheeled floor units. Low headroom limits vertical drum lifters and dispensing heights; narrow aisles limit straddle-style trucks. Measure the doorway, the aisle and the clear height under the hook before you order.
ASME B30.20 covers below-the-hook lifting devices, including marking with rated load, construction, inspection and operation, and ASME BTH-1 covers their structural and mechanical design. Where a lifter hangs on slings and shackles, as the Kenco bin block lifts do, ASME B30.9 addresses slings, ASME B30.26 addresses rigging hardware, and OSHA 1910.184 sets sling requirements. The KL9K26T36 listing notes the lifter is engineered to ASME.
On the powered side, OSHA 1910.178(l) requires operator training and evaluation for powered industrial trucks, and that training has to reflect the attachment actually in use, not just the truck. Maintenance is simple but not optional: check clamp pads and gripping surfaces for wear, pins and welds for cracks, hydraulic seals and casters on drum trucks, and take any device with a deformed or unreadable capacity marking out of service.
The recurring mistakes are predictable. Buyers size to the empty container instead of the filled one. They match capacity but ignore grip range, then find the clamp will not close on the load. They forget the lifter's own weight against the hoist rating. They buy one drum device and expect it to handle steel, plastic and fiber drums with equal security. They order a heavy below-the-hook lifter with no plan to unload it at the dock. And they train operators on the truck but not on the attachment. Working through load, carrier and site in that order — with the published capacity and grip range of the specific model in front of you — avoids nearly all of it.
